The Divine Guru is the Giver, the Teacher of the Lord's Name. The Divine Guru is the Mantra which never fails.

The Divine Guru is the Image of peace, truth and wisdom. The Divine Guru is the Philosopher's Stone - touching it, one is transformed.
guradev teerath amrit sarovar gur giaan majan aparanparaa |
The Divine Guru is the sacred shrine of pilgrimage, and the pool of divine ambrosia; bathing in the Guru's wisdom, one experiences the Infinite.

The Divine Guru is the Creator, and the Destroyer of all sins; the Divine Guru is the Purifier of sinners.
guradev aad jugaad jug jug guradev mant har jap udharaa |
The Divine Guru existed at the primal beginning, throughout the ages, in each and every age. The Divine Guru is the Mantra of the Lord's Name; chanting it, one is saved.

O God, please be merciful to me, that I may be with the Divine Guru; I am a foolish sinner, but holding onto Him, I am carried across.

He Himself acts, and causes others to act; He Himself can do everything.

O Nanak, the One Lord is pervading everywhere; there has never been any other, and there never shall be. ||1||

In the beginning, in the middle, and in the end, He is the Formless Lord.

He Himself is in the absolute state of primal meditation; He Himself is in the seat of peace.
aapeh sunat aap hee jaasan |
He Himself listens to His Own Praises.
aapan aap aapeh upaaeo |
He Himself created Himself.
aapeh baap aap hee maaeo |
He is His Own Father, He is His Own Mother.
aapeh sookham aapeh asathoolaa |
He Himself is subtle and etheric; He Himself is manifest and obvious.

O God, Merciful to the meek, please be kind to me,

He Himself is formless, and also formed; the One Lord is without attributes, and also with attributes.

Describe the One Lord as One, and Only One; O Nanak, He is the One, and the many. ||1||

ONG: The One Universal Creator created the Creation through the Word of the Primal Guru.
ekeh soot parovanahaaraa |
He strung it upon His one thread.
bhin bhin trai gun bisathaaran |
He created the diverse expanse of the three qualities.
niragun te saragun drisattaaran |
From formless, He appeared as form.
sagal bhaat kar kareh upaaeo |
The Creator has created the creation of all sorts.
janam maran man mohu badtaaeo |
The attachment of the mind has led to birth and death.
duhoo bhaat te aap niraaraa |
He Himself is above both, untouched and unaffected.
naanak ant na paaraavaaraa |2|
O Nanak, He has no end or limitation. ||2||
seee saah bhagavant se sach sanpai har raas |
Those who gather Truth, and the riches of the Lord's Name, are rich and very fortunate.
naanak sach such paaeeai tih santan kai paas |1|
O Nanak, truthfulness and purity are obtained from Saints such as these. ||1||
sasaa sat sat sat soaoo |
SASSA: True, True, True is that Lord.
sat purakh te bhin na koaoo |
No one is separate from the True Primal Lord.
soaoo saran parai jih paayan |
They alone enter the Lord's Sanctuary, whom the Lord inspires to enter.
simar simar gun gaae sunaayan |
Meditating, meditating in remembrance, they sing and preach the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
sansai bharam nahee kachh biaapat |
Doubt and skepticism do not affect them at all.
pragatt prataap taahoo ko jaapat |
They behold the manifest glory of the Lord.
so saadhoo ih pahuchanahaaraa |
They are the Holy Saints - they reach this destination.
naanak taa kai sad balihaaraa |3|
Nanak is forever a sacrifice to them. ||3||
dhan dhan kahaa pukaarate maaeaa moh sabh koor |
Why are you crying out for riches and wealth? All this emotional attachment to Maya is false.
naam bihoone naanakaa hot jaat sabh dhoor |1|
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O Nanak, all are reduced to dust. ||1||
dhadhaa dhoor puneet tere janooaa |
DHADHA: The dust of the feet of the Saints is sacred.
dhan teaoo jih ruch eaa manooaa |
Blessed are those whose minds are filled with this longing.
dhan nahee baachheh surag na aachheh |
They do not seek wealth, and they do not desire paradise.
at pria preet saadh raj raacheh |
They are immersed in the deep love of their Beloved, and the dust of the feet of the Holy.
dhandhe kahaa biaapeh taahoo |
How can worldly affairs affect those,
jo ek chhaadd an kateh na jaahoo |
Who do not abandon the One Lord, and who go nowhere else?
jaa kai heeai deeo prabh naam |
One whose heart is filled with God's Name,
naanak saadh pooran bhagavaan |4|
O Nanak, is a perfect spiritual being of God. ||4||
anik bhekh ar ngiaan dhiaan manahatth miliaau na koe |
By all sorts of religious robes, knowledge, meditation and stubborn-mindedness, no one has ever met God.
kahu naanak kirapaa bhee bhagat ngiaanee soe |1|
Says Nanak, those upon whom God showers His Mercy, are devotees of spiritual wisdom. ||1||
ngangaa ngiaan nahee mukh baatau |
NGANGA: Spiritual wisdom is not obtained by mere words of mouth.
anik jugat saasatr kar bhaatau |
It is not obtained through the various debates of the Shaastras and scriptures.
ngiaanee soe jaa kai drirr soaoo |
They alone are spiritually wise, whose minds are firmly fixed on the Lord.
kehat sunat kachh jog na hoaoo |
Hearing and telling stories, no one attains Yoga.
ngiaanee rehat aagiaa drirr jaa kai |
They alone are spiritually wise, who remain firmly committed to the Lord's Command.
ausan seet samasar sabh taa kai |
Heat and cold are all the same to them.
ngiaanee tat guramukh beechaaree |
The true people of spiritual wisdom are the Gurmukhs, who contemplate the essence of reality;
naanak jaa kau kirapaa dhaaree |5|
O Nanak, the Lord showers His Mercy upon them. ||5||
aavan aae srisatt meh bin boojhe pas dtor |
Those who have come into the world without understanding are like animals and beasts.
naanak guramukh so bujhai jaa kai bhaag mathor |1|
O Nanak, those who become Gurmukh understand; upon their foreheads is such pre-ordained destiny. ||1||
yaa jug meh ekeh kau aaeaa |
They have come into this world to meditate on the One Lord.
janamat mohio mohanee maaeaa |
But ever since their birth, they have been enticed by the fascination of Maya.
garabh kuntt meh uradh tap karate |
Upside-down in the chamber of the womb, they performed intense meditation.
saas saas simarat prabh rahate |
They remembered God in meditation with each and every breath.
aurajh pare jo chhodd chhaddaanaa |
But now, they are entangled in things which they must leave behind.
devanahaar maneh bisaraanaa |
They forget the Great Giver from their minds.
dhaarahu kirapaa jiseh gusaaee |
O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy,
eit ut naanak tis bisarahu naahee |6|
do not forget Him, here or hereafter. ||6||
aavat hukam binaas hukam aagiaa bhin na koe |
By His Command, we come, and by His Command, we go; no one is beyond His Command.
aavan jaanaa tih mittai naanak jih man soe |1|
Coming and going in reincarnation is ended, O Nanak, for those whose minds are filled with the Lord. ||1||
eaoo jeea bahut grabh vaase |
This soul has lived in many wombs.
moh magan meetth jon faase |
Enticed by sweet attachment, it has been trapped in reincarnation.
ein maaeaa trai gun bas keene |
This Maya has subjugated beings through the three qualities.
aapan moh ghatte ghatt deene |
Maya has infused attachment to itself in each and every heart.
e saajan kachh kahahu upaaeaa |
O friend, tell me some way,
jaa te trau bikham ih maaeaa |
by which I may swim across this treacherous ocean of Maya.
kar kirapaa satasang milaae |
The Lord showers His Mercy, and leads us to join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
naanak taa kai nikatt na maae |7|
O Nanak, Maya does not even come near. ||7||
kirat kamaavan subh asubh keene tin prabh aap |
God Himself causes one to perform good and bad actions.
pas aapan hau hau karai naanak bin har kahaa kamaat |1|
The beast indulges in egotism, selfishness and conceit; O Nanak, without the Lord, what can anyone do? ||1||
ekeh aap karaavanahaaraa |
The One Lord Himself is the Cause of all actions.
aapeh paap pun bisathaaraa |
He Himself distributes sins and noble acts.
eaa jug jit jit aapeh laaeo |
In this age, people are attached as the Lord attaches them.
so so paaeo ju aap divaaeo |
They receive that which the Lord Himself gives.
auaa kaa ant na jaanai koaoo |
No one knows His limits.
jo jo karai soaoo fun hoaoo |
Whatever He does, comes to pass.
ekeh te sagalaa bisathaaraa |
From the One, the entire expanse of the Universe emanated.
naanak aap savaaranahaaraa |8|
O Nanak, He Himself is our Saving Grace. ||8||
raach rahe banitaa binod kusam rang bikh sor |
Man remains engrossed in women and playful pleasures; the tumult of his passion is like the dye of the safflower, which fades away all too soon.
naanak tih saranee prau binas jaae mai mor |1|
O Nanak, seek God's Sanctuary, and your selfishness and conceit shall be taken away. ||1||
re man bin har jeh rachahu teh teh bandhan paeh |
O mind: without the Lord, whatever you are involved in shall bind you in chains.
jih bidh katahoo na chhootteeai saakat teaoo kamaeh |
The faithless cynic does those deeds which will never allow him to be emancipated.
hau hau karate karam rat taa ko bhaar afaar |
Acting in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the lovers of rituals carry the unbearable load.
preet nahee jau naam siau tau eaoo karam bikaar |
When there is no love for the Naam, then these rituals are corrupt.
baadhe jam kee jevaree meetthee maaeaa rang |
The rope of death binds those who are in love with the sweet taste of Maya.
bhram ke mohe neh bujheh so prabh sadahoo sang |
Deluded by doubt, they do not understand that God is always with them.
lekhai ganat na chhootteeai kaachee bheet na sudh |
When their accounts are called for, they shall not be released; their wall of mud cannot be washed clean.
jiseh bujhaae naanakaa tih guramukh niramal budh |9|
One who is made to understand - O Nanak, that Gurmukh obtains immaculate understanding. ||9||
ttootte bandhan jaas ke hoaa saadhoo sang |
One whose bonds are cut away joins the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
jo raate rang ek kai naanak goorraa rang |1|
Those who are imbued with the Love of the One Lord, O Nanak, take on the deep and lasting color of His Love. ||1||
raaraa rangahu eaa man apanaa |
RARRA: Dye this heart of yours in the color of the Lord's Love.
har har naam japahu jap rasanaa |
Meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har - chant it with your tongue.
re re daragah kahai na koaoo |
In the Court of the Lord, no one shall speak harshly to you.
aau baitth aadar subh deaoo |
Everyone shall welcome you, saying, "Come, and sit down."
auaa mahalee paaveh too baasaa |
In that Mansion of the Lord's Presence, you shall find a home.
janam maran neh hoe binaasaa |
There is no birth or death, or destruction there.
masatak karam likhio dhur jaa kai |
One who has such karma written on his forehead,
har sanpai naanak ghar taa kai |10|
O Nanak, has the wealth of the Lord in his home. ||10||
laalach jhootth bikaar moh biaapat moorre andh |
Greed, falsehood, corruption and emotional attachment entangle the blind and the foolish.
laag pare duragandh siau naanak maaeaa bandh |1|
Bound down by Maya, O Nanak, a foul odor clings to them. ||1||
lalaa lapatt bikhai ras raate |
LALLA: People are entangled in the love of corrupt pleasures;
ahanbudh maaeaa mad maate |
they are drunk with the wine of egotistical intellect and Maya.
eaa maaeaa meh janameh maranaa |
In this Maya, they are born and die.
jiau jiau hukam tivai tiau karanaa |
People act according to the Hukam of the Lord's Command.
koaoo aoon na koaoo pooraa |
No one is perfect, and no one is imperfect.
koaoo sughar na koaoo mooraa |
No one is wise, and no one is foolish.
jit jit laavahu tith tit laganaa |
Wherever the Lord engages someone, there he is engaged.
naanak tthaakur sadaa alipanaa |11|
O Nanak, our Lord and Master is forever detached. ||11||
laal gupaal gobind prabh gahir ganbheer athaah |
My Beloved God, the Sustainer of the World, the Lord of the Universe, is deep, profound and unfathomable.
doosar naahee avar ko naanak beparavaah |1|
There is no other like Him; O Nanak, He is not worried. ||1||
lalaa taa kai lavai na koaoo |
LALLA: There is no one equal to Him.
ekeh aap avar neh hoaoo |
He Himself is the One; there shall never be any other.
hovanahaar hot sad aaeaa |
He is now, He has been, and He shall always be.
auaa kaa ant na kaahoo paaeaa |
No one has ever found His limit.
keett hasat meh poor samaane |
In the ant and in the elephant, He is totally pervading.
pragatt purakh sabh tthaaoo jaane |
The Lord, the Primal Being, is known by everyone everywhere.
jaa kau deeno har ras apanaa |
That one, unto whom the Lord has given His Love
naanak guramukh har har tih japanaa |12|
- O Nanak, that Gurmukh chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||12||
aatam ras jih jaaniaa har rang sahaje maan |
One who knows the taste of the Lord's sublime essence, intuitively enjoys the Lord's Love.
naanak dhan dhan dhan jan aae te paravaan |1|
O Nanak, blessed, blessed, blessed are the Lord's humble servants; how fortunate is their coming into the world! ||1||
aaeaa safal taahoo ko ganeeai |
How fruitful is the coming into the world, of those
jaas rasan har har jas bhaneeai |
whose tongues celebrate the Praises of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
aae baseh saadhoo kai sange |
They come and dwell with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy;
anadin naam dhiaaveh range |
night and day, they lovingly meditate on the Naam.
aavat so jan naameh raataa |
Blessed is the birth of those humble beings who are attuned to the Naam;
jaa kau deaa meaa bidhaataa |
the Lord, the Architect of Destiny, bestows His Kind Mercy upon them.
ekeh aavan fir jon na aaeaa |
They are born only once - they shall not be reincarnated again.
naanak har kai daras samaaeaa |13|
O Nanak, they are absorbed into the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan. ||13||
yaas japat man hoe anand binasai doojaa bhaau |
Chanting it, the mind is filled with bliss; love of duality is eliminated, and pain, distress and desires are quenched.
dookh darad trisanaa bujhai naanak naam samaau |1|
O Nanak, immerse yourself in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||
yayaa jaarau duramat doaoo |
YAYYA: Burn away duality and evil-mindedness.
tiseh tiaag sukh sahaje soaoo |
Give them up, and sleep in intuitive peace and poise.
yayaa jaae parahu sant saranaa |
Yaya: Go, and seek the Sanctuary of the Saints;
jih aasar eaa bhavajal taranaa |
with their help, you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean.
yayaa janam na aavai soaoo |
Yaya: One who weaves the One Name into his heart,
ek naam le maneh paroaoo |
Does not have to take birth again.
yayaa janam na haareeai gur poore kee ttek |
Yaya: This human life shall not be wasted, if you take the Support of the Perfect Guru.
naanak tih sukh paaeaa jaa kai heearai ek |14|
O Nanak, one whose heart is filled with the One Lord finds peace. ||14||
antar man tan bas rahe eet aoot ke meet |
The One who dwells deep within the mind and body is your friend here and hereafter.
gur poorai upadesiaa naanak japeeai neet |1|
The Perfect Guru has taught me, O Nanak, to chant His Name continually. ||1||
anadin simarahu taas kau jo ant sahaaee hoe |
Night and day, meditate in remembrance on the One who will be your Help and Support in the end.
eih bikhiaa din chaar chhia chhaadd chalio sabh koe |
This poison shall last for only a few days; everyone must depart, and leave it behind.
kaa ko maat pitaa sut dheea |
Who is our mother, father, son and daughter?
grih banitaa kachh sang na leea |
Household, wife, and other things shall not go along with you.
aisee sanch ju binasat naahee |
So gather that wealth which shall never perish,
pat setee apunai ghar jaahee |
so that you may go to your true home with honor.
saadhasang kal keeratan gaaeaa |
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, those who sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy
naanak te te bahur na aaeaa |15|
- O Nanak, they do not have to endure reincarnation again. ||15||
at sundar kuleen chatur mukh ngiaanee dhanavant |
He may be very handsome, born into a highly respected family, very wise, a famous spiritual teacher, prosperous and wealthy;
miratak kaheeeh naanakaa jih preet nahee bhagavant |1|
but even so, he is looked upon as a corpse, O Nanak, if he does not love the Lord God. ||1||
ngangaa khatt saasatr hoe ngiaataa |
NGANGA: He may be a scholar of the six Shaastras.
poorak kunbhak rechak karamaataa |
He may practice inhaling, exhaling and holding the breath.
ngiaan dhiaan teerath isanaanee |
He may practice spiritual wisdom, meditation, pilgrimages to sacred shrines and ritual cleansing baths.
somapaak aparas udiaanee |
He may cook his own food, and never touch anyone else's; he may live in the wilderness like a hermit.
raam naam sang man nahee hetaa |
But if he does not enshrine love for the Lord's Name within his heart,
jo kachh keeno soaoo anetaa |
then everything he does is transitory.
auaa te aootam gnau chanddaalaa |
Even an untouchable pariah is superior to him,
naanak jih man baseh gupaalaa |16|
O Nanak, if the Lord of the World abides in his mind. ||16||
kuntt chaar deh dis bhrame karam kirat kee rekh |
He wanders around in the four quarters and in the ten directions, according to the dictates of his karma.
sookh dookh mukat jon naanak likhio lekh |1|
Pleasure and pain, liberation and reincarnation, O Nanak, come according to one's pre-ordained destiny. ||1||
kakaa kaaran karataa soaoo |
KAKKA: He is the Creator, the Cause of causes.
likhio lekh na mettat koaoo |
No one can erase His pre-ordained plan.
nahee hot kachh doaoo baaraa |
Nothing can be done a second time.
karanaihaar na bhoolanahaaraa |
The Creator Lord does not make mistakes.
kaahoo panth dikhaarai aapai |
To some, He Himself shows the Way.
kaahoo udiaan bhramat pachhutaapai |
While He causes others to wander miserably in the wilderness.
aapan khel aap hee keeno |
He Himself has set His own play in motion.
jo jo deeno su naanak leeno |17|
Whatever He gives, O Nanak, that is what we receive. ||17||
khaat kharachat bilachhat rahe ttoott na jaeh bhanddaar |
People continue to eat and consume and enjoy, but the Lord's warehouses are never exhausted.
har har japat anek jan naanak naeh sumaar |1|
So many chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; O Nanak, they cannot be counted. ||1||
khakhaa khoonaa kachh nahee tis samrath kai paeh |
KHAKHA: The All-powerful Lord lacks nothing;
jo denaa so de rahio bhaavai teh teh jaeh |
whatever He is to give, He continues to give - let anyone go anywhere he pleases.
kharach khajaanaa naam dhan eaa bhagatan kee raas |
The wealth of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a treasure to spend; it is the capital of His devotees.
khimaa gareebee anad sehaj japat raheh gunataas |
With tolerance, humility, bliss and intuitive poise, they continue to meditate on the Lord, the Treasure of excellence.
kheleh bigaseh anad siau jaa kau hot kripaal |
Those, unto whom the Lord shows His Mercy, play happily and blossom forth.
sadeev ganeev suhaavane raam naam grihi maal |
Those who have the wealth of the Lord's Name in their homes are forever wealthy and beautiful.
khed na dookh na ddaan tih jaa kau nadar karee |
Those who are blessed with the Lord's Glance of Grace suffer neither torture, nor pain, nor punishment.
naanak jo prabh bhaaniaa pooree tinaa paree |18|
O Nanak, those who are pleasing to God become perfectly successful. ||18||
gan min dekhahu manai maeh sarapar chalano log |
See, that even by calculating and scheming in their minds, people must surely depart in the end.
aas anit guramukh mittai naanak naam arog |1|
Hopes and desires for transitory things are erased for the Gurmukh; O Nanak, the Name alone brings true health. ||1||
gagaa gobid gun ravahu saas saas jap neet |
GAGGA: Chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe with each and every breath; meditate on Him forever.
kahaa bisaasaa deh kaa bilam na kariho meet |
How can you rely on the body? Do not delay, my friend;
neh baarik neh jobanai neh biradhee kachh bandh |
there is nothing to stand in Death's way - neither in childhood, nor in youth, nor in old age.
oeh beraa neh boojheeai jau aae parai jam fandh |
That time is not known, when the noose of Death shall come and fall on you.
giaanee dhiaanee chatur pekh rehan nahee ih tthaae |
See, that even spiritual scholars, those who meditate, and those who are clever shall not stay in this place.
chhaadd chhaadd sagalee gee moorr tahaa lapattaeh |
Only the fool clings to that, which everyone else has abandoned and left behind.
gur prasaad simarat rahai jaahoo masatak bhaag |
By Guru's Grace, one who has such good destiny written on his forehead remembers the Lord in meditation.
naanak aae safal te jaa kau prieh suhaag |19|
O Nanak, blessed and fruitful is the coming of those who obtain the Beloved Lord as their Husband. ||19||
ghokhe saasatr bed sabh aan na kathtau koe |
I have searched all the Shaastras and the Vedas, and they say nothing except this:
aad jugaadee hun hovat naanak ekai soe |1|
"In the beginning, throughout the ages, now and forevermore, O Nanak, the One Lord alone exists." ||1||
ghaghaa ghaalahu maneh eeh bin har doosar naeh |
GHAGHA: Put this into your mind, that there is no one except the Lord.
neh hoaa neh hovanaa jat kat ohee samaeh |
There never was, and there never shall be. He is pervading everywhere.
ghooleh tau man jau aaveh saranaa |
You shall be absorbed into Him, O mind, if you come to His Sanctuary.
naam tat kal meh punahacharanaa |
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, shall be of any real use to you.
ghaal ghaal anik pachhutaaveh |
So many work and slave continually, but they come to regret and repent in the end.
bin har bhagat kahaa thit paaveh |
Without devotional worship of the Lord, how can they find stability?
ghol mahaa ras amrit tih peea |
They alone taste the supreme essence, and drink in the Ambrosial Nectar,
naanak har gur jaa kau deea |20|
O Nanak, unto whom the Lord, the Guru, gives it. ||20||
ngan ghaale sabh divas saas neh badtan ghattan til saar |
He has counted all the days and the breaths, and placed them in people's destiny; they do not increase or decrease one little bit.

Those who long to live in doubt and emotional attachment, O Nanak, are total fools. ||1||

NGANGA: Death seizes those whom God has made into faithless cynics.

They are born and they die, enduring countless incarnations; they do not realize the Lord, the Supreme Soul.

They alone find spiritual wisdom and meditation,
kar kirapaa jih aap divaae |
whom the Lord blesses with His Mercy;
nganatee nganee nahee koaoo chhoottai |
no one is emancipated by counting and calculating.
kaachee gaagar sarapar foottai |
The vessel of clay shall surely break.
so jeevat jih jeevat japiaa |
They alone live, who, while alive, meditate on the Lord.

They are respected, O Nanak, and do not remain hidden. ||21||

Focus your consciousness on His Lotus Feet, and the inverted lotus of your heart shall blossom forth.

CHACHA: Blessed, blessed is that day,

when I became attached to the Lord's Lotus Feet.

After wandering around in the four quarters and the ten directions,
bhee kripaa tab darasan paaeo |
God showed His Mercy to me, and then I obtained the Blessed Vision of His Darshan.
chaar bichaar binasio sabh dooaa |
By pure lifestyle and meditation, all duality is removed.
saadhasang man niramal hooaa |
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the mind becomes immaculate.
chint bisaaree ek drisattetaa |
Anxieties are forgotten, and the One Lord alone is seen,
naanak giaan anjan jih netraa |22|
O Nanak, by those whose eyes are anointed with the ointment of spiritual wisdom. ||22||
chhaatee seetal man sukhee chhant gobid gun gaae |
The heart is cooled and soothed, and the mind is at peace, chanting and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe.
aisee kirapaa karahu prabh naanak daas dasaae |1|
Show such Mercy, O God, that Nanak may become the slave of Your slaves. ||1||
chhachhaa chhohare daas tumaare |
CHHACHHA: I am Your child-slave.
daas daasan ke paaneehaare |
I am the water-carrier of the slave of Your slaves.
chhachhaa chhaar hot tere santaa |
Chhachha: I long to become the dust under the feet of Your Saints.
apanee kripaa karahu bhagavantaa |
Please shower me with Your Mercy, O Lord God!
chhaadd siaanap bahu chaturaaee |
I have given up my excessive cleverness and scheming,
santan kee man ttek ttikaaee |
and I have taken the support of the Saints as my mind's support.

Even a puppet of ashes attains the supreme status,
naanak jaa kau sant sahaaee |23|
O Nanak, if it has the help and support of the Saints. ||23||
jor julam fooleh ghano kaachee deh bikaar |
Practicing oppression and tyranny, he puffs himself up; he acts in corruption with his frail, perishable body.
ahanbudh bandhan pare naanak naam chhuttaar |1|
He is bound by his egotistical intellect; O Nanak, salvation comes only through the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||
jajaa jaanai hau kachh hooaa |
JAJJA: When someone, in his ego, believes that he has become something,
baadhio jiau nalinee bhram sooaa |
he is caught in his error, like a parrot in a trap.
jau jaanai hau bhagat giaanee |
When he believes, in his ego, that he is a devotee and a spiritual teacher,
aagai tthaakur til nahee maanee |
then, in the world hereafter, the Lord of the Universe shall have no regard for him at all.
jau jaanai mai kathanee karataa |
When he believes himself to be a preacher,
biaapaaree basudhaa jiau firataa |
he is merely a peddler wandering over the earth.

But one who conquers his ego in the Company of the Holy,
naanak taa kau mile muraaree |24|
O Nanak, meets the Lord. ||24||
jhaalaaghe utth naam jap nis baasur aaraadh |
Rise early in the morning, and chant the Naam; worship and adore the Lord, night and day.
kaarhaa tujhai na biaapee naanak mittai upaadh |1|
Anxiety shall not afflict you, O Nanak, and your misfortune shall vanish. ||1||
jhajhaa jhooran mittai tumaaro |
JHAJHA: Your sorrows shall depart,
raam naam siau kar biauhaaro |
when you deal with the Lord's Name.
jhoorat jhoorat saakat mooaa |
The faithless cynic dies in sorrow and pain;
jaa kai ridai hot bhaau beea |
his heart is filled with the love of duality.
jhareh kasamal paap tere manooaa |
Your evil deeds and sins shall fall away, O my mind,
amrit kathaa santasang sunooaa |
listening to the ambrosial speech in the Society of the Saints.
jhareh kaam krodh drusattaaee |
Sexual desire, anger and wickedness fall away,
naanak jaa kau kripaa gusaaee |25|
O Nanak, from those who are blessed by the Mercy of the Lord of the World. ||25||
yatan karahu tum anik bidh rehan na paavahu meet |
You can try all sorts of things, but you still cannot remain here, my friend.
jeevat rahahu har har bhajahu naanak naam pareet |1|
But you shall live forevermore, O Nanak, if you vibrate and love the Naam, the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||
yanyaa yaanahu drirr sahee binas jaat eeh het |
NYANYA: Know this as absolutely correct, that that this ordinary love shall come to an end.
ganatee gnau na gan skau aootth sidhaare ket |
You may count and calculate as much as you want, but you cannot count how many have arisen and departed.
yo pekhau so binastau kaa siau kareeai sang |
Whoever I see shall perish. With whom should I associate?
yaanahu eaa bidh sahee chit jhootthau maaeaa rang |
Know this as true in your consciousness, that the love of Maya is false.
yaanat soee sant sue bhram te keechit bhin |
He alone knows, and he alone is a Saint, who is free of doubt.
andh koop te tih kadtahu jih hovahu suprasan |
He is lifted up and out of the deep dark pit; the Lord is totally pleased with him.
yaa kai haath samarath te kaaran karanai jog |
God's Hand is All-powerful; He is the Creator, the Cause of causes.

O Nanak, praise the One, who joins us to Himself. ||26||
ttootte bandhan janam maran saadh sev sukh paae |
The bondage of birth and death is broken and peace is obtained, by serving the Holy.

O Nanak, may I never forget from my mind, the Treasure of Virtue, the Sovereign Lord of the Universe. ||1||
ttehal karahu tau ek kee jaa te brithaa na koe |
Work for the One Lord; no one returns empty-handed from Him.

When the Lord abides within your mind, body, mouth and heart, then whatever you desire shall come to pass.
ttehal mehal taa kau milai jaa kau saadh kripaal |
He alone obtains the Lord's service, and the Mansion of His Presence, unto whom the Holy Saint is compassionate.
saadhoo sangat tau basai jau aapan hohi deaal |
He joins the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, only when the Lord Himself shows His Mercy.
ttohe ttaahe bahu bhavan bin naavai sukh naeh |
I have searched and searched, across so many worlds, but without the Name, there is no peace.
ttaleh jaam ke doot tih ju saadhoo sang samaeh |
The Messenger of Death retreats from those who dwell in the Saadh Sangat.
baar baar jaau sant sadake |
Again and again, I am forever devoted to the Saints.
naanak paap binaase kad ke |27|
O Nanak, my sins from so long ago have been erased. ||27||
tthaak na hotee tinahu dar jih hovahu suprasan |
Those beings, with whom the Lord is thoroughly pleased, meet with no obstacles at His Door.
jo jan prabh apune kare naanak te dhan dhan |1|
Those humble beings whom God has made His own, O Nanak, are blessed, so very blessed. ||1||
tthatthaa manooaa tthaaheh naahee |
T'HAT'HA: Those who have abandoned all else,
jo sagal tiaag ekeh lapattaahee |
and who cling to the One Lord alone, do not make trouble for anyone's mind.
tthehak tthehak maaeaa sang mooe |
Those who are totally absorbed and preoccupied with Maya are dead;
auaa kai kusal na katahoo hooe |
they do not find happiness anywhere.
tthaandt paree santah sang basiaa |
One who dwells in the Society of the Saints finds a great peace;
amrit naam tahaa jeea rasiaa |
the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam becomes sweet to his soul.
tthaakur apune jo jan bhaaeaa |
That humble being, who is pleasing to his Lord and Master
naanak uaa kaa man seetalaaeaa |28|
- O Nanak, his mind is cooled and soothed. ||28||
ddanddaut bandan anik baar sarab kalaa samarath |
I bow down, and fall to the ground in humble adoration, countless times, to the All-powerful Lord, who possesses all powers.
ddolan te raakhahu prabhoo naanak de kar hath |1|
Please protect me, and save me from wandering, God. Reach out and give Nanak Your Hand. ||1||
ddaddaa dderaa ihu nahee jeh dderaa teh jaan |
DADDA: This is not your true place; you must know where that place really is.
auaa dderaa kaa sanjamo gur kai sabad pachhaan |
You shall come to realize the way to that place, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
eaa dderaa kau sram kar ghaalai |
This place, here, is established by hard work,
jaa kaa tasoo nahee sang chaalai |
but not one iota of this shall go there with you.
auaa dderaa kee so mit jaanai |
The value of that place beyond is known only to those,
jaa kau drisatt pooran bhagavaanai |
upon whom the Perfect Lord God casts His Glance of Grace.
dderaa nihachal sach saadhasang paaeaa |
That permanent and true place is obtained in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy;
naanak te jan neh ddolaaeaa |29|
O Nanak, those humble beings do not waver or wander. ||29||
dtaahan laage dharam raae kineh na ghaalio bandh |
When the Righteous Judge of Dharma begins to destroy someone, no one can place any obstacle in His Way.
naanak ubare jap haree saadhasang sanabandh |1|
O Nanak, those who join the Saadh Sangat and meditate on the Lord are saved. ||1||
dtadtaa dtoodtat keh firahu dtoodtan eaa man maeh |
DHADHA: Where are you going, wandering and searching? Search instead within your own mind.
sang tuhaarai prabh basai ban ban kahaa firaeh |
God is with you, so why do you wander around from forest to forest?
dteree dtaahahu saadhasang ahanbudh bikaraal |
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, tear down the mound of your frightful, egotistical pride.
sukh paavahu sahaje basahu darasan dekh nihaal |
You shall find peace, and abide in intuitive bliss; gazing upon the Blessed Vision of God's Darshan, you shall be delighted.
dteree jaamai jam marai garabh jon dukh paae |
One who has such a mound as this, dies and suffers the pain of reincarnation through the womb.
moh magan lapattat rahai hau hau aavai jaae |
One who is intoxicated by emotional attachment, entangled in egotism, selfishness and conceit, shall continue coming and going in reincarnation.
dtehat dtehat ab dteh pare saadh janaa saranaae |
Slowly and steadily, I have now surrendered to the Holy Saints; I have come to their Sanctuary.
dukh ke faahe kaattiaa naanak lee samaae |30|
God has cut away the noose of my pain; O Nanak, He has merged me into Himself. ||30||
jeh saadhoo gobid bhajan keeratan naanak neet |
Where the Holy people constantly vibrate the Kirtan of the Praises of the Lord of the Universe, O Nanak
naa hau naa toon neh chhutteh nikatt na jaaeeahu doot |1|
- the Righteous Judge says, "Do not approach that place, O Messenger of Death, or else neither you nor I shall escape!" ||1||
naanaa ran te seejheeai aatam jeetai koe |
NANNA: One who conquers his own soul, wins the battle of life.
haumai an siau lar marai so sobhaa doo hoe |
One who dies, while fighting against egotism and alienation, becomes sublime and beautiful.
manee mittaae jeevat marai gur poore upades |
One who eradicates his ego, remains dead while yet alive, through the Teachings of the Perfect Guru.
manooaa jeetai har milai tih sooratan ves |
He conquers his mind, and meets the Lord; he is dressed in robes of honor.
naa ko jaanai aapano ekeh ttek adhaar |
He does not claim anything as his own; the One Lord is his Anchor and Support.
rain dinas simarat rahai so prabh purakh apaar |
Night and day, he continually contemplates the Almighty, Infinite Lord God.
ren sagal eaa man karai eaoo karam kamaae |
He makes his mind the dust of all; such is the karma of the deeds he does.
hukamai boojhai sadaa sukh naanak likhiaa paae |31|
Understanding the Hukam of the Lord's Command, he attains everlasting peace. O Nanak, such is his pre-ordained destiny. ||31||
tan man dhan arpau tisai prabhoo milaavai mohi |
I offer my body, mind and wealth to anyone who can unite me with God.

O Nanak, my doubts and fears have been dispelled, and the Messenger of Death does not see me any longer. ||1||
tataa taa siau preet kar gun nidh gobid raae |
TATTA: Embrace love for the Treasure of Excellence, the Sovereign Lord of the Universe.
fal paaveh man baachhate tapat tuhaaree jaae |
You shall obtain the fruits of your mind's desires, and your burning thirst shall be quenched.
traas mittai jam panth kee jaas basai man naau |
One whose heart is filled with the Name shall have no fear on the path of death.
gat paaveh mat hoe pragaas mahalee paaveh tthaau |
He shall obtain salvation, and his intellect shall be enlightened; he will find his place in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
taahoo sang na dhan chalai grih joban neh raaj |
Neither wealth, nor household, nor youth, nor power shall go along with you.
santasang simarat rahahu ihai tuhaarai kaaj |
In the Society of the Saints, meditate in remembrance on the Lord. This alone shall be of use to you.
taataa kachhoo na hoee hai jau taap nivaarai aap |
There will be no burning at all, when He Himself takes away your fever.
pratipaalai naanak hameh aapeh maaee baap |32|
O Nanak, the Lord Himself cherishes us; He is our Mother and Father. ||32||
thaake bahu bidh ghaalate tripat na trisanaa laath |
They have grown weary, struggling in all sorts of ways; but they are not satisfied, and their thirst is not quenched.
sanch sanch saakat mooe naanak maaeaa na saath |1|
Gathering in and hoarding what they can, the faithless cynics die, O Nanak, but the wealth of Maya does not go with them in the end. ||1||
thathaa thir koaoo nahee kaae pasaarahu paav |
T'HAT'HA: Nothing is permanent - why do you stretch out your feet?
anik banch bal chhal karahu maaeaa ek upaav |
You commit so many fraudulent and deceitful actions as you chase after Maya.
thailee sanchahu sram karahu thaak parahu gaavaar |
You work to fill up your bag, you fool, and then you fall down exhausted.
man kai kaam na aavee ante aausar baar |
But this shall be of no use to you at all at that very last instant.
thit paavahu gobid bhajahu santah kee sikh lehu |
You shall find stability only by vibrating upon the Lord of the Universe, and accepting the Teachings of the Saints.
preet karahu sad ek siau eaa saachaa asanehu |
Embrace love for the One Lord forever - this is true love!
kaaran karan karaavano sabh bidh ekai haath |
He is the Doer, the Cause of causes. All ways and means are in His Hands alone.
jit jit laavahu tith tit lageh naanak jant anaath |33|
Whatever You attach me to, to that I am attached; O Nanak, I am just a helpless creature. ||33||
daasah ek nihaariaa sabh kachh devanahaar |
His slaves have gazed upon the One Lord, the Giver of everything.
saas saas simarat raheh naanak daras adhaar |1|
They continue to contemplate Him with each and every breath; O Nanak, the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is their Support. ||1||
dadaa daataa ek hai sabh kau devanahaar |
DADDA: The One Lord is the Great Giver; He is the Giver to all.
dende tott na aavee aganat bhare bhanddaar |
There is no limit to His Giving. His countless warehouses are filled to overflowing.
dainahaar sad jeevanahaaraa |
The Great Giver is alive forever.
man moorakh kiau taeh bisaaraa |
O foolish mind, why have you forgotten Him?
dos nahee kaahoo kau meetaa |
No one is at fault, my friend.
maaeaa moh bandh prabh keetaa |
God created the bondage of emotional attachment to Maya.
darad nivaareh jaa ke aape |
He Himself removes the pains of the Gurmukh;
naanak te te guramukh dhraape |34|
O Nanak, he is fulfilled. ||34||
dhar jeeare ik ttek too laeh biddaanee aas |
O my soul, grasp the Support of the One Lord; give up your hopes in others.
naanak naam dhiaaeeai kaaraj aavai raas |1|
O Nanak, meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, your affairs shall be resolved. ||1||
dhadhaa dhaavat tau mittai santasang hoe baas |
DHADHA: The mind's wanderings cease, when one comes to dwell in the Society of the Saints.
dhur te kirapaa karahu aap tau hoe maneh paragaas |
If the Lord is Merciful from the very beginning, then one's mind is enlightened.
dhan saachaa teaoo sach saahaa |
Those who have the true wealth are the true bankers.
har har poonjee naam bisaahaa |
The Lord, Har, Har, is their wealth, and they trade in His Name.
dheeraj jas sobhaa tih baniaa |
Patience, glory and honor come to those
har har naam sravan jih suniaa |
who listen to the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
guramukh jih ghatt rahe samaaee |
That Gurmukh whose heart remains merged with the Lord,
naanak tih jan milee vaddaaee |35|
O Nanak, obtains glorious greatness. ||35||
naanak naam naam jap japiaa antar baahar rang |
O Nanak, one who chants the Naam, and meditates on the Naam with love inwardly and outwardly,
gur poorai upadesiaa narak naeh saadhasang |1|
receives the Teachings from the Perfect Guru; he joins the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and does not fall into hell. ||1||
nanaa narak pareh te naahee |
NANNA: Those whose minds and bodies are filled with the Naam,
jaa kai man tan naam basaahee |
The Name of the Lord, shall not fall into hell.
naam nidhaan guramukh jo japate |
Those Gurmukhs who chant the treasure of the Naam,
bikh maaeaa meh naa oe khapate |
are not destroyed by the poison of Maya.
nanaakaar na hotaa taa kahu |
Those who have been given the Mantra of the Naam by the Guru,
naam mantru gur deeno jaa kahu |
Shall not be turned away.
nidh nidhaan har amrit poore |
They are filled and fulfilled with the Ambrosial Nectar of the Lord, the Treasure of sublime wealth;
teh baaje naanak anahad toore |36|
O Nanak, the unstruck celestial melody vibrates for them. ||36||
pat raakhee gur paarabraham taj parapanch moh bikaar |
The Guru, the Supreme Lord God, preserved my honor, when I renounced hypocrisy, emotional attachment and corruption.
naanak soaoo aaraadheeai ant na paaraavaar |1|
O Nanak, worship and adore the One, who has no end or limitation. ||1||
papaa paramit paar na paaeaa |
PAPPA: He is beyond estimation; His limits cannot be found.
patit paavan agam har raaeaa |
The Sovereign Lord King is inaccessible;
hot puneet kott aparaadhoo |
He is the Purifier of sinners. Millions of sinners are purified;
amrit naam japeh mil saadhoo |
they meet the Holy, and chant the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord.
parapach dhroh moh mittanaaee |
Deception, fraud and emotional attachment are eliminated,
jaa kau raakhahu aap gusaaee |
by those who are protected by the Lord of the World.
paatisaahu chhatr sir soaoo |
He is the Supreme King, with the royal canopy above His Head.
naanak doosar avar na koaoo |37|
O Nanak, there is no other at all. ||37||
faahe kaatte mitte gavan fatih bhee man jeet |
The noose of Death is cut, and one's wanderings cease; victory is obtained, when one conquers his own mind.
naanak gur te thit paaee firan mitte nit neet |1|
O Nanak, eternal stability is obtained from the Guru, and one's day-to-day wanderings cease. ||1||
fafaa firat firat too aaeaa |
FAFFA: After wandering and wandering for so long, you have come;
drulabh deh kalijug meh paaeaa |
in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, you have obtained this human body, so very difficult to obtain.
fir eaa aausar charai na haathaa |
This opportunity shall not come into your hands again.
naam japahu tau katteeeh faasaa |
So chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and the noose of Death shall be cut away.
fir fir aavan jaan na hoee |
You shall not have to come and go in reincarnation over and over again,
ekeh ek japahu jap soee |
if you chant and meditate on the One and Only Lord.
karahu kripaa prabh karanaihaare |
Shower Your Mercy, O God, Creator Lord,
mel lehu naanak bechaare |38|
and unite poor Nanak with Yourself. ||38||
binau sunahu tum paarabraham deen deaal gupaal |
Hear my prayer, O Supreme Lord God, Merciful to the meek, Lord of the World.
sukh sanpai bahu bhog ras naanak saadh ravaal |1|
The dust of the feet of the Holy is peace, wealth, great enjoyment and pleasure for Nanak. ||1||
babaa braham jaanat te brahamaa |
BABBA: One who knows God is a Brahmin.
baisano te guramukh such dharamaa |
A Vaishnaav is one who, as Gurmukh, lives the righteous life of Dharma.
beeraa aapan buraa mittaavai |
One who eradicates his own evil is a brave warrior;
taahoo buraa nikatt nahee aavai |
no evil even approaches him.
baadhio aapan hau hau bandhaa |
Man is bound by the chains of his own egotism, selfishness and conceit.
dos det aagah kau andhaa |
The spiritually blind place the blame on others.
baat cheet sabh rahee siaanap |
But all debates and clever tricks are of no use at all.
jiseh janaavahu so jaanai naanak |39|
O Nanak, he alone comes to know, whom the Lord inspires to know. ||39||
bhai bhanjan agh dookh naas maneh araadh hare |
The Destroyer of fear, the Eradicator of sin and sorrow - enshrine that Lord in your mind.
santasang jih rid basio naanak te na bhrame |1|
One whose heart abides in the Society of the Saints, O Nanak, does not wander around in doubt. ||1||
bhabhaa bharam mittaavahu apanaa |
BHABHA: Cast out your doubt and delusion
eaa sansaar sagal hai supanaa |
this world is just a dream.
bharame sur nar devee devaa |
The angelic beings, goddesses and gods are deluded by doubt.
bharame sidh saadhik brahamevaa |
The Siddhas and seekers, and even Brahma are deluded by doubt.
bharam bharam maanukh ddahakaae |
Wandering around, deluded by doubt, people are ruined.
dutar mahaa bikham ih maae |
It is so very difficult and treacherous to cross over this ocean of Maya.
guramukh bhram bhai moh mittaaeaa |
That Gurmukh who has eradicated doubt, fear and attachment,
naanak teh param sukh paaeaa |40|
O Nanak, obtains supreme peace. ||40||
maaeaa ddolai bahu bidhee man lapattio tih sang |
Maya clings to the mind, and causes it to waver in so many ways.
maagan te jih tum rakhahu su naanak naameh rang |1|
When You, O Lord, restrain someone from asking for wealth, then, O Nanak, he comes to love the Name. ||1||
mamaa maaganahaar eaanaa |
MAMMA: The beggar is so ignorant
denahaar de rahio sujaanaa |
the Great Giver continues to give. He is All-knowing.
jo deeno so ekeh baar |
Whatever He gives, He gives once and for all.
man moorakh keh kareh pukaar |
O foolish mind, why do you complain, and cry out so loud?
jau maageh tau maageh beea |
Whenever you ask for something, you ask for worldly things;
jaa te kusal na kaahoo theea |
no one has obtained happiness from these.
maagan maag ta ekeh maag |
If you must ask for a gift, then ask for the One Lord.
naanak jaa te pareh paraag |41|
O Nanak, by Him, you shall be saved. ||41||
mat pooree paradhaan te gur poore man mant |
Perfect is the intellect, and most distinguished is the reputation, of those whose minds are filled with the Mantra of the Perfect Guru.

Those who come to know their God, O Nanak, are very fortunate. ||1||
mamaa jaahoo maram pachhaanaa |
MAMMA: Those who understand God's mystery are satisfied,
bhettat saadhasang pateeaanaa |
joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
dukh sukh uaa kai samat beechaaraa |
They look upon pleasure and pain as the same.
narak surag rehat aautaaraa |
They are exempt from incarnation into heaven or hell.
taahoo sang taahoo niralepaa |
They live in the world, and yet they are detached from it.
pooran ghatt ghatt purakh bisekhaa |
The Sublime Lord, the Primal Being, is totally pervading each and every heart.
auaa ras meh uaahoo sukh paaeaa |
In His Love, they find peace.
naanak lipat nahee tih maaeaa |42|
O Nanak, Maya does not cling to them at all. ||42||
yaar meet sun saajanahu bin har chhoottan naeh |
Listen, my dear friends and companions: without the Lord, there is no salvation.
naanak tih bandhan katte gur kee charanee paeh |1|
O Nanak, one who falls at the Feet of the Guru, has his bonds cut away. ||1||
yayaa jatan karat bahu bidheea |
YAYYA: People try all sorts of things,
ek naam bin keh lau sidheea |
but without the One Name, how far can they succeed?
yaahoo jatan kar hot chhuttaaraa |
Those efforts, by which emancipation may be attained
auaahoo jatan saadh sangaaraa |
those efforts are made in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
yaa ubaran dhaarai sabh koaoo |
Everyone has this idea of salvation,
auaaeh jape bin ubar na hoaoo |
but without meditation, there can be no salvation.
yaahoo taran taaran samaraathaa |
The All-powerful Lord is the boat to carry us across.
raakh lehu niragun naranaathaa |
O Lord, please save these worthless beings!
man bach kram jih aap janaaee |
Those whom the Lord Himself instructs in thought, word and deed
naanak tih mat pragattee aaee |43|
- O Nanak, their intellect is enlightened. ||43||
ros na kaahoo sang karahu aapan aap beechaar |
Do not be angry with anyone else; look within your own self instead.
hoe nimaanaa jag rahahu naanak nadaree paar |1|
Be humble in this world, O Nanak, and by His Grace you shall be carried across. ||1||
raaraa ren hot sabh jaa kee |
RARRA: Be the dust under the feet of all.
taj abhimaan chhuttai teree baakee |
Give up your egotistical pride, and the balance of your account shall be written off.
ran darageh tau seejheh bhaaee |
Then, you shall win the battle in the Court of the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny.
jau guramukh raam naam liv laaee |
As Gurmukh, lovingly attune yourself to the Lord's Name.
rehat rehat reh jaeh bikaaraa |
Your evil ways shall be slowly and steadily blotted out,
gur poore kai sabad apaaraa |
By the Shabad, the Incomparable Word of the Perfect Guru.
raate rang naam ras maate |
You shall be imbued with the Lord's Love, and intoxicated with the Nectar of the Naam.
naanak har gur keenee daate |44|
O Nanak, the Lord, the Guru, has given this gift. ||44||
laalach jhootth bikhai biaadh eaa dehee meh baas |
The afflictions of greed, falsehood and corruption abide in this body.
har har amrit guramukh peea naanak sookh nivaas |1|
Drinking in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Lord's Name, Har, Har, O Nanak, the Gurmukh abides in peace. ||1||
lalaa laavau aaukhadh jaahoo |
LALLA: One who takes the medicine of the Naam, the Name of the Lord,
dookh darad tih mitteh khinaahoo |
is cured of his pain and sorrow in an instant.
naam aaukhadh jih ridai hitaavai |
One whose heart is filled with the medicine of the Naam,
taeh rog supanai nahee aavai |
is not infested with disease, even in his dreams.
har aaukhadh sabh ghatt hai bhaaee |
The medicine of the Lord's Name is in all hearts, O Siblings of Destiny.
gur poore bin bidh na banaaee |
Without the Perfect Guru, no one knows how to prepare it.
gur poorai sanjam kar deea |
When the Perfect Guru gives the instructions to prepare it,
naanak tau fir dookh na theea |45|
then, O Nanak, one does not suffer illness again. ||45||
vaasudev sarabatr mai aoon na katahoo tthaae |
The All-pervading Lord is in all places. There is no place where He does not exist.
antar baahar sang hai naanak kaae duraae |1|
Inside and outside, He is with you. O Nanak, what can be hidden from Him? ||1||
vavaa vair na kareeai kaahoo |
WAWWA: Do not harbor hatred against anyone.
ghatt ghatt antar braham samaahoo |
In each and every heart, God is contained.
vaasudev jal thal meh raviaa |
The All-pervading Lord is permeating and pervading the oceans and the land.
gur prasaad viralai hee gaviaa |
How rare are those who, by Guru's Grace, sing of Him.
vair virodh mitte tih man te |
Hatred and alienation depart from those
har keeratan guramukh jo sunate |
who, as Gurmukh, listen to the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises.
varan chihan sagalah te rahataa |
O Nanak, one who becomes Gurmukh chants the Name of the Lord,
naanak har har guramukh jo kahataa |46|
Har, Har, and rises above all social classes and status symbols. ||46||
hau hau karat bihaaneea saakat mugadh ajaan |
Acting in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the foolish, ignorant, faithless cynic wastes his life.
rrarrak mue jiau trikhaavant naanak kirat kamaan |1|
He dies in agony, like one dying of thirst; O Nanak, this is because of the deeds he has done. ||1||
rraarraa rraarr mittai sang saadhoo |
RARRA: Conflict is eliminated in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy;
karam dharam tat naam araadhoo |
meditate in adoration on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the essence of karma and Dharma.
roorro jih basio rid maahee |
When the Beautiful Lord abides within the heart,
auaa kee rraarr mittat binasaahee |
conflict is erased and ended.
rraarr karat saakat gaavaaraa |
The foolish, faithless cynic picks arguments
jeh heeai ahanbudh bikaaraa |
his heart is filled with corruption and egotistical intellect.
rraarraa guramukh rraarr mittaaee |
RARRA: For the Gurmukh, conflict is eliminated in an instant,
nimakh maeh naanak samajhaaee |47|
O Nanak, through the Teachings. ||47||
saadhoo kee man ott gahu ukat siaanap tiaag |
O mind, grasp the Support of the Holy Saint; give up your clever arguments.
gur deekhiaa jih man basai naanak masatak bhaag |1|
One who has the Guru's Teachings within his mind, O Nanak, has good destiny inscribed upon his forehead. ||1||
sasaa saran pare ab haare |
SASSA: I have now entered Your Sanctuary, Lord;
saasatr simrit bed pookaare |
I am so tired of reciting the Shaastras, the Simritees and the Vedas.
sodhat sodhat sodh beechaaraa |
I searched and searched and searched, and now I have come to realize,
bin har bhajan nahee chhuttakaaraa |
that without meditating on the Lord, there is no emancipation.
saas saas ham bhoolanahaare |
With each and every breath, I make mistakes.
tum samarath aganat apaare |
You are All-powerful, endless and infinite.
saran pare kee raakh deaalaa |
I seek Your Sanctuary - please save me, Merciful Lord!
naanak tumare baal gupaalaa |48|
Nanak is Your child, O Lord of the World. ||48||
khudee mittee tab sukh bhe man tan bhe arog |
When selfishness and conceit are erased, peace comes, and the mind and body are healed.
naanak drisattee aaeaa usatat karanai jog |1|
O Nanak, then He comes to be seen - the One who is worthy of praise. ||1||
khakhaa kharaa saraahau taahoo |
KHAKHA: Praise and extol Him on High,
jo khin meh aoone subhar bharaahoo |
who fills the empty to over-flowing in an instant.
kharaa nimaanaa hot paraanee |
When the mortal being becomes totally humble,
anadin jaapai prabh nirabaanee |
then he meditates night and day on God, the Detached Lord of Nirvaanaa.
bhaavai khasam ta uaa sukh detaa |
If it pleases the Will of our Lord and Master, then He blesses us with peace.
paarabraham aiso aaganataa |
Such is the Infinite, Supreme Lord God.
asankh khate khin bakhasanahaaraa |
He forgives countless sins in an instant.
naanak saahib sadaa deaaraa |49|
O Nanak, our Lord and Master is merciful forever. ||49||
sat khau sun man mere saran parahu har raae |
I speak the Truth - listen, O my mind: take to the Sanctuary of the Sovereign Lord King.
aukat siaanap sagal tiaag naanak le samaae |1|
Give up all your clever tricks, O Nanak, and He shall absorb you into Himself. ||1||
sasaa siaanap chhaadd eaanaa |
SASSA: Give up your clever tricks, you ignorant fool!
hikamat hukam na prabh pateeaanaa |
God is not pleased with clever tricks and commands.
sehas bhaat kareh chaturaaee |
You may practice a thousand forms of cleverness,
sang tuhaarai ek na jaaee |
but not even one will go along with you in the end.
soaoo soaoo jap din raatee |
Meditate on that Lord, that Lord, day and night.
re jeea chalai tuhaarai saathee |
O soul, He alone shall go along with you.
saadh sevaa laavai jih aapai |
Those whom the Lord Himself commits to the service of the Holy,
naanak taa kau dookh na biaapai |50|
O Nanak, are not afflicted by suffering. ||50||
har har mukh te bolanaa man vootthai sukh hoe |
Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and keeping it in your mind, you shall find peace.
naanak sabh meh rav rahiaa thaan thanantar soe |1|
O Nanak, the Lord is pervading everywhere; He is contained in all spaces and interspaces. ||1||
herau ghatt ghatt sagal kai poor rahe bhagavaan |
Behold! The Lord God is totally pervading each and every heart.
hovat aae sad sadeev dukh bhanjan gur giaan |
Forever and ever, the Guru's wisdom has been the Destroyer of pain.
hau chhuttakai hoe anand tih hau naahee teh aap |
Quieting the ego, ecstasy is obtained. Where the ego does not exist, God Himself is there.
hate dookh janamah maran santasang parataap |
The pain of birth and death is removed, by the power of the Society of the Saints.
hit kar naam drirrai deaalaa |
He becomes kind to those who lovingly enshrine the Name of the Merciful Lord within their hearts,
santah sang hot kirapaalaa |
In the Society of the Saints.
orai kachhoo na kinahoo keea |
In this world, no one accomplishes anything by himself.
naanak sabh kachh prabh te hooaa |51|
O Nanak, everything is done by God. ||51||
lekhai kateh na chhootteeai khin khin bhoolanahaar |
Because of the balance due on his account, he can never be released; he makes mistakes each and every moment.
bakhasanahaar bakhas lai naanak paar utaar |1|
O Forgiving Lord, please forgive me, and carry Nanak across. ||1||
loon haraamee gunahagaar begaanaa alap mat |
The sinner is unfaithful to himself; he is ignorant, with shallow understanding.
jeeo pindd jin sukh dee taeh na jaanat tat |
He does not know the essence of all, the One who gave him body, soul and peace.
laahaa maaeaa kaarane deh dis dtoodtan jaae |
For the sake of personal profit and Maya, he goes out, searching in the ten directions.
devanahaar daataar prabh nimakh na maneh basaae |
He does not enshrine the Generous Lord God, the Great Giver, in his mind, even for an instant.
laalach jhootth bikaar moh eaa sanpai man maeh |
Greed, falsehood, corruption and emotional attachment - these are what he collects within his mind.
lanpatt chor nindak mahaa tinahoo sang bihaae |
The worst perverts, thieves and slanderers - he passes his time with them.
tudh bhaavai taa bakhas laihi khotte sang khare |
But if it pleases You, Lord, then You forgive the counterfeit along with the genuine.
naanak bhaavai paarabraham paahan neer tare |52|
O Nanak, if it pleases the Supreme Lord God, then even a stone will float on water. ||52||
khaat peet khelat hasat bharame janam anek |
Eating, drinking, playing and laughing, I have wandered through countless incarnations.
bhavajal te kaadtahu prabhoo naanak teree ttek |1|
Please, God, lift me up and out of the terrifying world-ocean. Nanak seeks Your Support. ||1||
khelat khelat aaeo anik jon dukh paae |
Playing, playing, I have been reincarnated countless times, but this has only brought pain.
khed mitte saadhoo milat satigur bachan samaae |
Troubles are removed, when one meets with the Holy; immerse yourself in the Word of the True Guru.
khimaa gahee sach sanchio khaaeo amrit naam |
Adopting an attitude of tolerance, and gathering truth, partake of the Ambrosial Nectar of the Name.
kharee kripaa tthaakur bhee anad sookh bisraam |
When my Lord and Master showed His Great Mercy, I found peace, happiness and bliss.
khep nibaahee bahut laabh ghar aae pativant |
My merchandise has arrived safely, and I have made a great profit; I have returned home with honor.
kharaa dilaasaa gur deea aae mile bhagavant |
The Guru has given me great consolation, and the Lord God has come to meet me.
aapan keea kareh aap aagai paachhai aap |
He Himself has acted, and He Himself acts. He was in the past, and He shall be in the future.
naanak soaoo saraaheeai ji ghatt ghatt rahiaa biaap |53|
O Nanak, praise the One, who is contained in each and every heart. ||53||
aae prabh saranaagatee kirapaa nidh deaal |
O God, I have come to Your Sanctuary, O Merciful Lord, Ocean of compassion.
ek akhar har man basat naanak hot nihaal |1|
One whose mind is filled with the One Word of the Lord, O Nanak, becomes totally blissful. ||1||
akhar meh tribhavan prabh dhaare |
In the Word, God established the three worlds.
akhar kar kar bed beechaare |
Created from the Word, the Vedas are contemplated.
akhar saasatr sinmrit puraanaa |
From the Word, came the Shaastras, Simritees and Puraanas.
akhar naad kathan vakhayaanaa |
From the Word, came the sound current of the Naad, speeches and explanations.
akhar mukat jugat bhai bharamaa |
From the Word, comes the way of liberation from fear and doubt.
akhar karam kirat such dharamaa |
From the Word, come religious rituals, karma, sacredness and Dharma.
drisattimaan akhar hai jetaa |
In the visible universe, the Word is seen.
naanak paarabraham niralepaa |54|
O Nanak, the Supreme Lord God remains unattached and untouched. ||54||
hath kalam agam masatak likhaavatee |
With pen in hand, the Inaccessible Lord writes man's destiny on his forehead.
aurajh rahio sabh sang anoop roopaavatee |
The Lord of Incomparable Beauty is involved with all.
ausatat kehan na jaae mukhahu tuhaareea |
I cannot describe Your Praises with my mouth, O Lord.

Nanak is fascinated, gazing upon the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan; he is a sacrifice to You. ||1||

O Immovable Lord, O Supreme Lord God, Imperishable, Destroyer of sins:

O Perfect, All-pervading Lord, Destroyer of pain, Treasure of virtue:

O Companion, Formless, Absolute Lord, Support of all:
he gobid he gun nidhaan jaa kai sadaa bibek |
O Lord of the Universe, Treasure of excellence, with clear eternal understanding:
he aparanpar har hare heh bhee hovanahaar |
Most Remote of the Remote, Lord God: You are, You were, and You shall always be.
he santah kai sadaa sang nidhaaraa aadhaar |
O Constant Companion of the Saints, You are the Support of the unsupported.
he tthaakur hau daasaro mai niragun gun nahee koe |
O my Lord and Master, I am Your slave. I am worthless, I have no worth at all.

Nanak: grant me the Gift of Your Name, Lord, that I may string it and keep it within my heart. ||55||

The Divine Guru is our mother, the Divine Guru is our father; the Divine Guru is our Lord and Master, the Transcendent Lord.
guradev sakhaa agiaan bhanjan guradev bandhip sahodaraa |
The Divine Guru is my companion, the Destroyer of ignorance; the Divine Guru is my relative and brother.
guradev daataa har naam upadesai guradev mant nirodharaa |
The Divine Guru is the Giver, the Teacher of the Lord's Name. The Divine Guru is the Mantra which never fails.
guradev saant sat budh moorat guradev paaras paras paraa |
The Divine Guru is the image of peace, truth and wisdom. The Divine Guru is the Philosopher's Stone - touching it, one is transformed.
guradev teerath amrit sarovar gur giaan majan aparanparaa |
The Divine Guru is the sacred shrine of pilgrimage, and the pool of divine nectar; bathing in the Guru's wisdom, one experiences the Infinite.
guradev karataa sabh paap harataa guradev patit pavit karaa |
The Divine Guru is the Creator, and the Destroyer of all sins; the Divine Guru is the Purifier of sinners.
guradev aad jugaad jug jug guradev mant har jap udharaa |
The Divine Guru existed in the very beginning, throughout the ages, in each and every age. The Divine Guru is the Mantra of the Lord's Name; chanting it, one is saved.
guradev sangat prabh mel kar kirapaa ham moorr paapee jit lag taraa |
O God, please be merciful to me, that I may be with the Divine Guru; I am a foolish sinner, but holding onto Him, I will be carried across.
guradev satigur paarabraham paramesar guradev naanak har namasakaraa |1|
The Divine Guru is the True Guru, the Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord; Nanak bows in humble reverence to the Lord, the Divine Guru. ||1||
