The Heroic Poem of Sri Bhagauti Ji
पातिसाही १० ॥
(By) TheTenth King (Guru).
प्रिथम भगौती सिमरि कै गुर नानक लईं धिआइ ॥
In the beginning I remember Bhagauti, the Lord (Whose symbol is the sword and then I remember Guru Nanak.
फिर अंगद गुर ते अमरदासु रामदासै होईं सहाइ ॥
Then I remember Guru Arjan, Guru Amar Das and Guru Ram Das, may they be helpful to me.
अरजन हरिगोबिंद नो सिमरौ स्री हरिराइ ॥
Then I remember Guru Arjan, Guru Hargobind and Guru Har Rai.
स्री हरिक्रिशन धिआईऐ जिस डिठे सभि दुखि जाइ ॥
(After them) I remember Guru Har Kishan, by whose sight all the sufferings vanish.
तेग बहादर सिमरिऐ घर नउ निधि आवै धाइ ॥
Then I do remember Guru Tegh Bahadur, though whose Grace the nine treasures come running to my house.
सभ थाईं होइ सहाइ ॥१॥
May they be helpful to me everywhere.1.

PAURI
खंडा प्रिथमै साज कै जिन सभ सैसारु उपाइआ ॥
At first the Lord created the double-edged sword and then He created the whole world.
ब्रहमा बिसनु महेस साजि कुदरति दा खेलु रचाइ बणाइआ ॥
He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and then created the play of Nature.
सिंध परबत मेदनी बिनु थंम्हा गगनि रहाइआ ॥
He created the oceans, mountains and the earth made the sky stable without columns.
सिरजे दानो देवते तिन अंदरि बादु रचाइआ ॥
He created the demons and gods and caused strife between them.
तै ही दुरगा साजि कै दैता दा नासु कराइआ ॥
O Lord! By creating Durga, Thou hast caused the destruction of demons.
तैथों ही बलु राम लै नाल बाणा दहसिरु घाइआ ॥
Rama received power from Thee and he killed the ten-headed Ravana with arrows.
तैथों ही बलु क्रिसन लै कंसु केसी पकड़ि गिराइआ ॥
Krishna received power from Thee and he threw down Kansa by catching his hair.
बडे बडे मुनि देवते कई जुग तिनी तनु ताइआ ॥
The great sages and gods, even practising great austerities for several ages
किनी तेरा अंतु न पाइआ ॥२॥
None could know Thy end.2.
साधू सतजुगु बीतिआ अध सीली त्रेता आइआ ॥
The saintly Satyuga (the age of Truth) passed away and the Treta age of semi-righteousness came.
नची कल सरोसरी कल नारद डउरू वाइआ ॥
The discord danced over all the heads and Kal and Narad sounded their tabor.
अभिमानु उतारन देवतिआं महिखासुर सुंभ उपाइआ ॥
Mahishasura and Sumbh were created for removing the pride of the gods.
जीति लए तिन देवते तिह लोकी राजु कमाइआ ॥
They conquered the gods and ruled over the three worlds.
वडा बीरु अखाइ कै सिर उपर छत्रु फिराइआ ॥
He was called a great hero and had a canopy moving over his head.
दिता इंद्रु निकाल कै तिन गिर कैलासु तकाइआ ॥
Indra was turned out of his kingdom and he looked towards the Kailash mountain.
डरि कै हथो दानवी दिल अंदरि त्रासु वधाइआ ॥
Frightened by the demons, the element of fear grew enormously in his heart
पास दुरगा दे इंद्रु आइआ ॥३॥
He came, therefore to Durga.3.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
इक दिहाड़े नावण आई दुरगसाह ॥
One day Durga came for a bath.
इंद्र बिरथा सुणाई अपणे हाल दी ॥
Indra related to her the story agony:
छीन लई ठकुराई साते दानवी ॥
“The demons have seized from us our kingdom."
लोकी तिही फिराई दोही आपणी ॥
“They have proclaimed their authority over all the three worlds."
बैठे वाइ वधाई ते अमरावती ॥
“They have played musical instruments in their rejoicings in Amaravati, the city of gods."
दिते देव भजाई सभना राकसां ॥
“All the demons have caused the flight of the gods."
किने न जिता जाई महखे दैत नूं ॥
“None hath gone and conquered Mahikha, the demon."
तेरी साम तकाई देवी दुरगसाह ॥४॥
“O goddess Durga, I have come under Thy refuge.”4.

PAURI
दुरगा बैण सुणंदी हसी हड़हड़ाइ ॥
Listening to these words (of Indra), Durga laughed heartily.
ओही सीहु मंगाइआ राकस भखणा ॥
She sent for that lion, who was she devourer of demons.
चिंता करहु न काई देवा नूं आखिआ ॥
She said to gods, “Do not worry mother any more.”
रोह होई महा माई राकसि मारणे ॥५॥
For killing the demons, the great mother exhibited great fury.5.
दोहरा ॥
DOHRA
राकसि आए रोहले खेत भिड़न के चाइ ॥
The infuriated demons came with the desire of fighting in the battlefield.
लसकन तेगां बरछीआं सूरजु नदरि न पाइ ॥६॥
The swords and daggers glisten with such brilliance that the sun cannot be seen.6.

PAURI
दुहां कंधारा मुहि जुड़े ढोल संख नगारे बजे ॥
Both the armies faced each other and the drums, conches and trumpets sounded.
राकसि आए रोहले तरवारी बखतर सजे ॥
The demons came in great rage, decorated with swords and armour.
जुटे सउहे जुध नूं इक जात न जाणन भजे ॥
The warriors were facing the war-front and none of them knows to retrace his steps.
खेत अंदरि जोधे गजे ॥७॥
The brave fighters were roaring in the battlefield.7.

PAURI
जंग मुसाफा बजिआ रण घुरे नगारे चावले ॥
The war-trumpet sounded and the enthusiastic drums thundered in the battlefield.
झूलण नेजे बैरका नीसाण लसनि लिसावले ॥
The lances swung and the lustrous tassels of the banners glistened.
ढोल नगारे पउण दे ऊंघन जाण जटावले ॥
The drums and trumpets echoed and the worriors were dozing like the drunkard with matted hair.
दुरगा दानो डहे रण नाद वजन खेतु भीहावले ॥
Durga and demons waged war in the battlefield where dreadful music is being played.
बीर परोते बरछीएं जण डाल चमुटे आवले ॥
The brave fighters were pierced by daggers like the phylianthus emblica sticking with the bough.
इक वढे तेगी तड़फीअन मद पीते लोटनि बावले ॥
Some writhe being chopped by the sword like the rolling mad drunkards.
इक चुण चुण झाड़उ कढीअन रेत विचों सुइना डावले ॥
Some are picked up from the bushes like the process of panning out gold from the sand.
गदा त्रिसूलां बरछीआं तीर वगन खरे उतावले ॥
The maces, tridents, daggers and arrows are being struck with real hurry.
जण डसे भुजंगम सावले मर जावन बीर रुहावले ॥८॥
It appears that black snakes are stinging and the furious heroes are dying.8.

PAURI
देखन चंड प्रचंड नूं रण घुरे नगारे ॥
Seeing the intense glory of Chandi, the trumpets souded in the battlefield.
धाए राकसि रोहले चउगिरदो भारे ॥
The highly furious demons ran on all four sides.
हथीं तेगां पकड़ि कै रण भिड़े करारे ॥
Holding their swords in their hands they fought very bravely in the battlefield.
कदे न नठे जुध ते जोधे जुझारे ॥
These militant fighters never ran away from war-arena.
दिल विच रोह बढाइ कै मारि मारि पुकारे ॥
Highly infuriated they shouted “kill, kill” in their ranks.
मारे चंड प्रचंड नै बीर खेत उतारे ॥
The intensely glorious Chandi killed the warriors and threw them in the field.
मारे जापन बिजुली सिरभार मुनारे ॥९॥
It appeared that the lightning had eradicated the minarets and thrown them headlong.9.

PAURI
चोट पई दमामे दलां मुकाबला ॥
The drum was beaten and the armies attacked each other.
देवी दसत नचाई सीहण सारदी ॥
The goddess caused the dancing of the lioness of steel (sword)
पेट मलंदे लाई महखे दैत नूं ॥
And gave a blow to the demon Mahisha who was rubbing his belly.
गुरदे आंदा खाई नाले रुकड़े ॥
(The sword) pierced the kindneys, intestines and the ribs.
जेही दिल विच आई कही सुणाइ कै ॥
Whatever hath come in my mind, I have related that.
चोटी जाण दिखाई तारे धूमकेत ॥१०॥
It appears that Dhumketu (the shooting star) had displayed its top-knot.10.

PAURI
चोटां पवन नगारे अणीआं जुटीआं ॥
The drums are being beaten and the armies are engaged in close fight with each other.
धूह लईआं तरवारी देवां दानवी ॥
The gods and demons have drawn their swords.
वाहन वारो वारी सूरे संघरे ॥
And strike them again and again killing warriors.
वगै रतु झुलारी जिउ गेरू बाबत्रा ॥
The blood flows like waterfall in the same manner as the red ochre colour is washed off from clothes.
देखन बैठ अटारी नारी राकसां ॥
The ladies of demons see the fight, while sitting in their lofts.
पाई धूम सवारी दुरगा दानवी ॥११॥
The carriage of the goddess Durga hath raised a tumult amongst the demons.11.

PAURI
लख नगारे वजन आम्हो साम्हणे ॥
A hundred thousand trumpets resound facing one another.
राकस रणो न भजन रोहे रोहले ॥
The highly infuriated demons do not flee from the battlefield.
सीहां वांगू गजण सभे सूरमे ॥
All the warriors roar like lions.
तणि तणि कैबर छडन दुरगा सामणे ॥१२॥
They stretch their bows and shoot the arrows in front it Durga.12.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
घुरे नगारे दोहरे रण संगलीआले ॥
The dual chained trumpets sounded in the battlefield.
धूड़ि लपेटे धूहरे सिरदार जटाले ॥
The demon chieftains having matted locks are enveloped in dust.
उखलीआं नासा जिना मुहि जापन आले ॥
Their nostrils are like mortars and the mouths seem like niches.
धाए देवी साहमणे बीर मुछलीआले ॥
The brave fighters bearing long moustaches ran in front of the goddess.
सुरपत जेहे लड़ हटे बीर टले न टाले ॥
The warriors like the king of gods (Indra) had become tired of fighting, but the brave fighters could not be averted from their stand.
गजे दुरगा घेरि कै जणु घणीअर काले ॥१३॥
They roared. On besieging Durga, like dark clouds.13.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
चोट पई खरचामी दलां मुकाबला ॥
The drum, wrapped in donkey’s hide, was beaten and the armies attacked each other.
घेर लई वरिआमी दुरगा आइ कै ॥
The brave demon-warriors besieged Durga.
राकस वडे अलामी भज न जाणदे ॥
They are greatly knowledgeable in warfare and do not know running back.
अंत होए सुरगामी मारे देवता ॥१४॥
They ultimately went to heaven on being killed by the goddess.14.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
अगणत घुरे नगारे दलां भिड़ंदिआं ॥
With the flaring up of fight between the armies, innumerable trumpets sounded.
पाए महखल भारे देवां दानवां ॥
The gods and demons both have raised great tumult like male buffalos.
वाहन फट करारे राकसि रोहले ॥
The infuriated demons strike strong blows causing wounds.
जापण तेगी आरे मिआनो धूहीआं ॥
It appears that the sword pulled from the scabbards are like saws.
जोधे वडे मुनारे जापन खेत विच ॥
The warriors look like high minarets in the battlefield.
देवी आप सवारे पब जवेहणे ॥
The goddess herself killed these mountain-like demons.
कदे न आखन हारे धावन साहमणे ॥
They never uttered the word ‘defeat’ and ran in front of the goddess.
दुरगा सभ संघारे राकसि खड़ग लै ॥१५॥
Durga, holding her sword, killed all the demons.15.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
उमल लथे जोधे मारू बजिआ ॥
The fatal martial music sounded and the warriors came in the battlefield with enthusiasm.
बदल जिउ महिखासुर रण विचि गजिआ ॥
Mahishasura thundered in the field like the cloud
इंद्र जेहा जोधा मैथउ भजिआ ॥
“The warrior like Indra fled from me
कउण विचारी दुरगा जिन रणु सजिआ ॥१६॥
“Who is this wretched Durga, who hath come to srart war with me?”16.
वजे ढोल नगारे दलां मुकाबला ॥
The drums and trumpets have sounded and the armies have attacked each other.
तीर फिरै रैबारे आम्हो साम्हणे ॥
The arrows move opposite to each other guidingly.
अगणत बीर संघारे लगदी कैबरी ॥
With the infliction of arrows countless warriors have been killed.
डिगे जाणि मुनारे मारे बिजु दे ॥
Falling like the minarets smote by lightning.
खुली वालीं दैत अहाड़े सभे सूरमे ॥
All the demon-fighters with untied hair shouted in agony.
सुते जाणि जटाले भंगां खाइ कै ॥१७॥
It seems that the hermits with matted locks are sleeping after eating the intoxicating hemps.17.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
दुहां कंधारां मुहि जुड़े नालि धउसा भारी ॥
Both the armies are facing each other alongwith the resounding big trumpet.
कड़क उठिआ फउज ते वडा अहंकारी ॥
The highly egoist warrior of the army thundered.
लै कै चलिआ सूरमे नालि वडे हजारी ॥
He is moving towards the war-arena with thousands of mighty warriors.
मिआनो खंडा धूहिआ महखासुर भारी ॥
Mahishasura pulled out his huge double-edged sword from his scabbard.
उमल लथे सूरमे मार मची करारी ॥
The fighters entered the field enthusiastically and there occurred formidable fighting.
जापे चले रत दे सलले जटधारी ॥१८॥
It appears that the blood flows like the water (of Ganges) from the tangled hair of Shiva.18.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
सट पई जमधाणी दलां मुकाबला ॥
When the trumpet, enveloped by the hide of the male buffalo, the vehicle of Yama, sounded, the armies attacked each other.
धूहि लई क्रिपाणी दुरगा मिआन ते ॥
Durga pulled her sword from the scabbard.
चंडी राकसि खाणी वाही दैत नूं ॥
She struck the demon with that Chandi, the devourer of demons (that is the sword).
कोपर चूर चवाणी लथी करग लै ॥
It broke the skull and face into pieces and pierced through the skeleton.
पाखर तुरा पलाणी रड़की धरत जाइ ॥
And it further pierced through the saddle and caparison of the horse, and struck on the earth supported by the Bull (Dhaul).
लैदी अघा सिधाणी सिंगां धउल दिआं ॥
It moved further and struck the horns of the Bull.
कूरम सिर लहिलाणी दुसमन मारि कै ॥
Then it struck on the Tortoise supporting the Bull and thus killing the enemy.
वढे गन तिखाणी मूए खेत विच ॥
The demons are lying dead in the battlefield like the pieces of wood sawed by the carpenter.
रण विच घती घाणी लोहू मिझ दी ॥
The press of blood and marrow has been set in motion in the battlefield.
चारे जुग कहाणी चलग तेग दी ॥
The story of the sword will be related in all the four ages.
बिधण खेत विहाणी महखे दैत नूं ॥१९॥
On the demon Mahisha the period of agony occurred in the battlefield.19.
इती महखासुर दैत मारे दुरगा आइआ ॥
In this way the demon Mahishasura was killed on the arrival of Durga.
चउदह लोकां राणी सिंघ नचाइआ ॥
The queen caused the lion to dance in the fourteen worlds.
मारे बीर जटाणी दल विच अगले ॥
She killed a great number of brave demons with matted locks in the battlefield.
मंगन नाही पाणी दली हंघार कै ॥
Challenging the armies, these warriors do not even ask for water.
जण करी समाइ पठाणी सुणि कै राग नूं ॥
It seems that listening to the music, the Pathans have realized the state of ecstasy.
रतू दे हड़वाणी चले बीर खेत ॥
The flood of the blood of the fighters is flowing.
पीता फुलु इआणी घुमन सूरमे ॥२०॥
The brave warriors are roaming as if they have ignorantly consumed the intoxicating poppy.20.
होई अलोप भवानी देवां नूं राज दे ॥
Bhavani (Durga) disappeard after bestowing kingdom on the gods.
ईसर दी बरदानी होई जित दिन ॥
The day for which Shiva granted the boon.
सुंभ निसुंभ गुमानी जनमे सूरमे ॥
The proud warriors Sumbh and Nisumbh were born.
इंद्र दी राजधानी तकी जितनी ॥२१॥
They planned to conquer the capital of Indra.21.
इंद्रपुरी ते धावणा वड जोधी मता पकाइआ ॥
The great fighters decided to rush towards the kingdom of Indra.
संज पटेला पाखरा भेड़ संदा साजु बणाइआ ॥
They began to prepare the war-material consisting of armour with belts and saddle-gear.
जंमे कटक अछूहणी असमानु गरदी छाइआ ॥
An army of lakhs of warriors gathered and the dust rose to sky.
रोह सुंभ निसुंभ सिधाइआ ॥२२॥
Sumbh and Nisumbh, full of rage, have marched forward.22.

सुंभ निसुंभ अलाइआ वड जोधी संघरु वाए ॥
Sumbh and Nisumbh ordered the great warriors to sound the bugle of war.
रोह दिखाली दितीआ वरिआमी तुरे नचाए ॥
Great fury was visulised and the brave fighters caused the horses to dance.
घुरे दमामे दोहरे जम बाहण जिउ अरड़ाए ॥
The double-trumpets sounded like the loud voice of the male buffalo, the vehicle of Yama.
देउ दानो लुझण आए ॥२३॥
The gods and demons have gathered to fight.23.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
दानो देउ अनागी संघरु रचिआ ॥
The demons and gods have started a continuous war.
फुल खिड़े जण बागीं बाणे जोधिआं ॥
The garments of the warriors appear like flowers in the garden.
भूतां इलां कागीं गोसत भखिआ ॥
The ghosts, vultures and crows have eaten the flesh.
हुंमड़ धुंमड़ जागी घती सूरिआं ॥२४॥
The brave fighters have begun to run about.24.
सट पई नगारे दलां मुकाबला ॥
The trumpet was beaten and the armies attack each other.
दिते देउ भजाई मिलि कै राकसीं ॥
The demons have gathered together and have caused the gods to flee.
लोकी तिही फिराही दोही आपणी ॥
They exhibited their authority in the three worlds.
दुरगा दी साम तकाई देवां डरदिआं ॥
The gods, having been frightened went under the refuge of Durga.
आंदी चंडि चड़ाई उते राकसा ॥२५॥
They caused the goddess Chandi to wage war with demons.25.

PAURI
आई फेर भवानी खबरी पाईआ ॥
The demons hear the news that the goddess Bhavani has come again.
दैत वडे अभिमानी होए एकठे ॥
The highly egoist demons gathered together.
लोचन धूम गुमानी राइ बुलाइआ ॥
The king Sumbh sent for the egoist Lochan Dhum.
जग विच वडा दानो आप कहाइआ ॥
He caused himself to be called the great demon.
सट पई खरचामी दुरगा लिआवणी ॥२६॥
The drum enveloped with the hide of donkey was struck and it was proclaimed that Durga would be brought.26.

कड़क उठी रण चंडी फउजां देख कै ॥
Seeing the armies in the battlefield, Chandi shouted loudly.
धूहि मिआनो खंडा होई साहमणे ॥
She pulled her double-edged sword from her scabbard and came before the enemy.
सभे बीर संघारे धूमरनैण दे ॥
She killed all the warriors of Dhumar Nain.
जण लै कटे आरे दरखत बाढीआं ॥२७॥
It seems that the carpenters have chopped the trees with the saw.27.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
चोबीं धउंस बजाई दलां मुकाबला ॥
The drummers sounded the drums and the armies attacked each other.
रोह भवानी आई उते राकसां ॥
The infuriated Bhavani lodged the attack over the demons.
खबै दसत नचाई सीहण सार दी ॥
With her left hand, she caused the dance of the lionss of steel (sword).
बहुतिआं दे तन लाई कीती रंगुली ॥
She struck it on the bodies of many worriors and made it colourful.
भाईआं मारन भाई दुरगा जाणि कै ॥
The brothers kill brothers mistaking them for Durga.
रोह होइ चलाई राकसि राइ नूं ॥
Having been infuriated, she struck it on the king of the demons.
जम पुर दीआ पठाई लोचन धूम नूं ॥
Lochan Dhum was sent to the city of Yama.
जापे दिती साई मारन सुंभ दी ॥२८॥
It seems the she gave the advance money for the killing of Sumbh.28.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
भंने दैत पुकारे राजे सुंभ थै ॥
The demons ran to their king Sumbh and beseeched
लोचन धूम संघारे सणे सिपाहीआं ॥
“Lochan Dhum has been killed alongwith his soldiers
चुणि चुणि जोधे मारे अंदर खेत दै ॥
“She hath seleted the warriors and killed them in the battlefield
जापन अंबरि तारे डिगनि सूरमे ॥
“It seems that the warriors have fallen like the stars from the sky
गिरे परबत भारे मारे बिजु दे ॥
“The huge mountains have fallen, having been smote by the lightning
दैतां दे दल हारे दहसत खाइ कै ॥
“The forces of the demons have been defeated on becoming panicky
बचे सु मारे मारे रहदे राइ थै ॥२९॥
“Those who were left have also been killed and the remaining have come to the king.”29.

रोह होइ बुलाए राकसि राइ ने ॥
Highly enraged, the king called the demons.
बैठे मता पकाए दुरगा लिआवणी ॥
They decided to capture Durga.
चंड अर मुंड पठाए बहुता कटकु दै ॥
Chand and Mund were sent with huge forces.
जापे छपर छाए बणीआ केजमा ॥
It seemed that the swords coming together were like the thatched roofs.
जेते राइ बुलाए चले जुध नो ॥
All those who were called, marched for war.
जण जम पुर पकड़ चलाए सभे मारणे ॥३०॥
It appear that they were all caught and sent to the city of Yama for killing.30.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
ढोल नगारे वाए दलां मुकाबला ॥
The drums and trumpets were sounded and the armies attacked each other.
रोह रुहेले आए उते राकसां ॥
The enraged warriors marched against the demons.
सभनी तुरे नचाए बरछे पकड़ि कै ॥
All of them holding their daggers, caused their horses to dance.
बहुते मार गिराए अंदर खेत दै ॥
Many were killed and thrown in the battlefield.
तीरी छहबर लाई बुठी देवता ॥३१॥
The arrows shot by the goddess came in showers.31.
भेरी संख वजाए संघरि रचिआ ॥
The drums and conches were sounded and the war began.
तणि तणि तीर चलाए दुरगा धनख लै ॥
Durga, taking her bow, stretched it again and again for shooting arrows.
जिनी दसत उठाए रहे न जीवदे ॥
Those who raised their hands against the goddess, did not survive.
चंड अर मुंड खपाए दोनो देवता ॥३२॥
She destroyed both Chand and Mund.32.
सुंभ निसुंभ रिसाए मारे दैत सुण ॥
Sumbh and Nisumbh were highly enraged on hearing this killing.
जोधे सभ बुलाए आपणी मजलसी ॥
They called all the brave fighters, who were their advisers.
जिनी देउ भजाए इंद्र जेवहे ॥
Those who had caused the gods like Indra run away.
तेई मार गिराए पल विच देवता ॥
The goddess killed them in an instant.
ओनी दसती दसत वजाए तिना चित करि ॥
Keeping Chand Mund in their mind, they rubbed their hands in sorrow.
फिर स्रणवत बीज चलाए बीड़े राइ दे ॥
Then Sranwat Beej was prepared and sent by the king.
संज पटोला पाए चिलकत टोपीआं ॥

कदे न किने हटाए जुध मचाइ कै ॥
After waging war, none could get their retreat.
मिल तेई दानो आए हुण संघरि देखणा ॥३३॥
Such demons have gathered together and come, now see the ensuing war.33.

दैती डंड उभारी नेड़ै आइ कै ॥
On coming near, the demons raised the din.
सिंघ करी असवारी दुरगा सोर सुण ॥
Hearing this clamour, Durga mounted her lion.
खबे दसत उभारी गदा फिराइ कै ॥
She twirled her mace, raising it with her left hand.
सैना सभ संघारी स्रणवत बीज दी ॥
She killed all the army of Sranwat Beej.
जण मद खाइ मदारी घूमन सूरमे ॥
It appears that the warriors were roaming like the drug addicts taking drugs.
अगणत पाउ पसारी रुले अहाड़ विचि ॥
Innumerable warriors are lying neglected in the battlefield, stretching their legs.
जापे खेड खिडारी सुते फाग नूं ॥३४॥
It seems that the revelers playing Holi are sleeping.34.
स्रणवत बीज हकारे रहिंदे सूरमे ॥
Sranwat Beej called all the remaining warriors.
जोधे जेड मुनारे दिसन खेत विचि ॥
They seem like minarets in the battlefield.
सभनी दसत उभारे तेगां धूहि कै ॥
All of them pulling their swords, raised their hands.
मारो मार पुकारे आए साहमणे ॥
They came in front shouting “kill, kill”.
संजाते ठणिकारे तेगीं उबरे ॥
With the striking of swords on the armour, the clatter arises.
घाड़ घड़नि ठठिआरे जाणि बणाइ कै ॥३५॥
It seems that the tinkers are fashioning the vessels with the blows of hammer.35.
सट पई जमधाणी दलां मुकाबला ॥
When the trumpet enveloped by the hide of the male buffalo, the vehicle of Yama, sounded, the armies attacked each other.
घूमर बरग सताणी दल विचि घतीओ ॥
(The goddess) was the cause of flight and consternation in the battlefield.
सणे तुरा पलाणी डिगण सूरमे ॥
The warriors fall alongwith their horses and saddles.
उठि उठि मंगणि पाणी घाइल घूमदे ॥
The wounded ones arise and ask for water while roaming.
एवडु मारि विहाणी उपर राकसां ॥
Such a great calamity fell on the demons.
बिजल जिउ झरलाणी उठी देवता ॥३६॥
From this side the goddess rose like thundering lightning.36.

चोबी धउस उभारी दलां मुकाबला ॥
The drummer sounded the trumpet and the armies attacked each other.
सभो सैना मारी पल विचि दानवी ॥
All the army of the demons was killed in an instant.
दुरगा दानो मारे रोह बढाइ कै ॥
Highly infuriated, Durga killed the demons.
सिर विच तेग वगाई स्रणवत बीज दे ॥३७॥
She struck the sword on the head of Sranwat Beej.37.
अगणत दानो भारे होए लोहूआ ॥
Innumerable mighty demons were steeped in blood.
जोधे जेड मुनारे अंदरि खेत दै ॥
Those minarets-like demons in the battlefield
दुरगा नो ललकारे आवण साहमणे ॥
They challenged Durga and came in front of her.
दुरगा सभ संघारे राकस आंवदे ॥
Durga killed all the coming demons.
रतू दे परनाले तिन ते भुइ पए ॥
From their bodies the drains of blood fell on the ground.
उठे कारणिआरे राकस हड़हड़ाइ ॥३८॥
Some of the active demons arise out of them laughingly.38.
धगा संगलीआली संघर वाइआ ॥
The enchained trumpets and bugles sounded.
बरछी बंबलीआली सूरे संघरे ॥
The warriors fought with daggers bedecked with tassels.
भेड़ि मचिआ बीराली दुरगा दानवीं ॥
The war of bravery was waged between Durga and demos.
मार मची मुहराली अंदरि खेत दै ॥
There had been extreme destruction in the battlefield.
जण नट लथे छाली ढोलि बजाइ कै ॥
It appears that the actors, sounding their drum, have jumped into the war-arena.
लोहू फाथी जाली लोथी जमधड़ी ॥
The dagger penetrated in the corpse seems like a blood stained fish entrapped in the net.
घण विचि जिउ छंछाली तेगां हसीआं ॥
The swords glistened like the lightning in the clouds.
घुमरआर सिआली बणीआं केजमां ॥३९॥
The swords have covered (the battlefield) like the winter-fog.39.
धगा सूली बजाईआं दलां मुकाबला ॥
The trumpets were sounded with the beating of drum-stick and the armies attacked each other.
धूहि मिआनो लईआं जुआनी सूरमी ॥
The youthful warriors pulled out their swords from their scabbards.
स्रणवत बीज बधाईआं अगणत सूरतां ॥
Sranwat Beej increased himself into innumerable forms.
दुरगा सउहें आईआं रोह बढाइ कै ॥
Which came in front of Durga, highly enraged.
सभनी आण वगाईआं तेगां धूह कै ॥
All of them pulled out their swords and struck.
दुरगा सभ बचाईआं ढाल संभाल कै ॥
Durga saved herself from all, holding her shield carefully.
देवी आप चलाईआं तकि तकि दानवी ॥
The goddess herself then struck her sword looking carefully toward the demons.
लोहू नालि डुबाईआं तेगां नंगीआं ॥
She steeped her naked swords in blood.
सारसुती जनु नाईआं मिल कै देवीआं ॥
It appeared that the goddesses gathering together, took their bath in river Saraswati.
सभे मार गिराईआं अंदरि खेत दै ॥
The goddess hath killed and thrown on the ground in the battlefield (all the forms of Sranwat Beej).
तिदूं फेरि सवाईआं होईआं सूरतां ॥४०॥
Immediately then the forms again increased greatly.40.

सूरी संघरि रचिआ ढोल संख नगारे वाइ कै ॥
Sounding their drums, conches and trumpets, the warriors have begun the war.
चंड चितारी कालका मन बाहला रोस बढाइ कै ॥
Chandi, being highly enraged, remembered Kali in her mind.
निकली मथा फोड़ि कै जन फते नीसाण बजाइ कै ॥
She came out shattering the forehead of Chandi, sounding the trumpet and flying flag of victory.
जाग सु जंमी जुध नूं जरवाणा जण मरड़ाइ कै ॥
On manifesting herself, she marched for war, like Bir Bhadra manifesting from Shiva.
दल विचि घेरा घतिआ जण सींह तुरिआ गणिणाइ कै ॥
The battlefield was surrounded by her and she seemed moving like a roaring lion.
आप विसूला होइआ तिहु लोकां ते खुनसाइ कै ॥
(The demon-king) himself was in great anguish, while exhibiting his anger over the three worlds.
रोह सिधाइआं चक्र पान कर निंदा खड़ग उठाइ कै ॥
Durga, being enraged, hath marched, holding her disc in her hand and raising her sword.
अगै राकस बैठे रोहले तीरी तेगी छहबर लाइ कै ॥
There before her there were infuriated demons, she caught and knocked down the demons.
पकड़ पछाड़े राकसां दल दैतां अंदरि जाइ कै ॥
Going within the forces of demons, she caught and knocked down the demons.
बहु केसी पकड़ि पछाड़िअनि तिन अंदरि धूम रचाइ कै ॥
She threw down by catching them from their hair and raising a tumult among their forces.
बडे बडे चुण सूरमे गहि कोटी दए चलाइ कै ॥
She picked up mighty fighters by catching them with the corner of her bow and throwing them
रण काली गुसा खाइ कै ॥४१॥
In her fury, Kali hath done this in the battlefield.41.

दुहा कंधारा मुहि जुड़े अणीआरां चोईआ ॥
Both the armies are facing each other and the blood is dripping from the tips of arrows.
धूहि किरपाणां तिखीआ नाल लोहू धोईआं ॥
Pulling the sharp swords, they have been washed with blood.
हूरां स्रणत बीज नूं घति घेरि खलोईआं ॥
The heavenly damsels (houris), surrounding Sranwat Beej, are standing
लाड़ा देखण लाड़ीआं चउगिरदे होईआं ॥४२॥
Like the brides surrounding the bridegroom in order to see him.42.
चोबी धउसा पाईआं दलां मुकाबला ॥
The drummer beat the trumpet and armies attacked each other.
दसती धूह नचाईआं तेगां नंगीआं ॥
सूरिआं दे तन लाईआं गोसत गिधीआं ॥
With their hands they pulled the naked sword and caused their dance.
बिधण राती आईआं मरदां घोड़िआं ॥
These devourers of meat were struck on the bodies of the warriors.
जोगणीआं मिलि धाईआं लोहू भखणा ॥
The nights of agony have come for the men and horses.
फउजां मार हटाईआं देवां दानवां ॥
The Yoginis have come together speedily in order to drink the blood.
भजदी कथा सुणाईआं राजे सुंभ थै ॥
They told the story of their repulsion before the king Sumbh.
भुईं न पउणै पाईआं बूंदा रकत दीआ ॥
The drops of blood (of Sranwat Beej) could not fall on the earth.
काली खेत खपाईआं सभे सूरतां ॥
Kali destroyed all the manifestations of (Sranwat Beej) in the battlefield.
बहुती सिरी बिहाईआं घड़ीआं काल कीआं ॥
The last moments of death came over the heads of many fighters.
जाणि न जाए माईआं जूझे सूरमे ॥४३॥
The brave fighters could not even be recognized by their mothers, who gave birth to them.43.
सुंभ सुणी करहाली स्रणवत बीज दी ॥
Sumbh heard the bad news about the death of Sranwat Beej
रण विचि किनै न झाली दुरगा आंवदी ॥
And that none could withstand the marching Durga in the battlefield.
बहुते बीर जटाली उठे आख कै ॥
Many brave fighters with matted hair got up saing
चोटा पान तबाली जासन जुध नूं ॥
That drummers should sound the drums because they would go for war.
थरि थरि प्रिथमी चाली दलां चड़ंदिआं ॥
When the armies marched, the earth trembled
नाउ जिवे है हाली सहु दरीआउ विचि ॥
Like the shaking boat, which is still in the river.
धूड़ि उताहां घाली छड़ी तुरंगमां ॥
The dust arose with the hooves of the horses
जाणि पुकारू चाली धरती इंद्र थै ॥४४॥
And it seemed that the earth is going to Indra for a complaint.44.

आहरि मिलिआ आहरीआं सैण सूरिआं साजी ॥
The willing workers got engaged in work and as warriors they equipped the army.
चले सउहे दुरगसाह जण काबै हाजी ॥
They marched in front of Durga, like pilgrims going for Haj to Kaabah (Mecca).
तीरी तेगी जमधड़ी रण वंडी भाजी ॥
They are inviting the warriors in the battlefield through the medium of arrows, swords and daggers.
इक घाइल घूमन सूरमे जण मकतब काजी ॥
Some wounded warriors are swinging like the Quadis in the school, reciting the holy Quran.
इक बीर परोते बरछीए जिउ झुक पउन निवाजी ॥
Some brave fighters are pierced by daggers and lining like a devout Muslim performing prayer.
इक दुरगा सउहे खुनस कै खुनसाइन ताजी ॥
Some go in front of Durga in great fury by inciting their malicious horses.
इक धावन दुरगा साम्हणे जिउ भुखिआए पाजी ॥
Some run in front of Durga like the hungry scoundrels
कदे न रजे जुध ते रज होए राजी ॥४५॥
Who had never been satisfied in the war, but now they are satiated and pleased.45.
बजे संगलीआले संघर डोहरे ॥
The enchained double trumpets sounded.
डहे जु खेत जटाले हाठां जोड़ि कै ॥
Gathering together in ranks, the warriors with matted hair are engaged in war in the battlefield.
नेजे बंबलीआले दिसन ओरड़े ॥
The lances bedecked with tassels seem leaning
चले जाण जटाले नावण गंग नूं ॥४६॥
Like the hermits with matted locks going towards the Ganges for taking a bath.46.

दुरगा अतै दानवी सूल होईआं कंगां ॥
The forces of Durga and demons are piercing each other like sharp thorns.
वाछड़ घती सूरिआं विच खेत खतंगां ॥
The warriors showered arrows in the battlefield.
धूहि क्रिपाणा तिखीआं बढ लाहनि अंगां ॥
Pulling their sharp swords, they chop the limbs.
पहला दलां मिलंदिआं भेड़ पाइआ निहंगा ॥४७॥
When the forces met, at first there was war with swords.47.
पउड़ी ॥
PAURI
ओरड़ फउजां आईआं बीर चड़े कंधारी ॥
The forces came in great numbers and the ranks of warriors marched forward
सड़क मिआनो कढीआं तिखीआं तरवारी ॥
They pulled their sharp swords from their scabbards.
कड़क उठे रण मचिआ वडे हंकारी ॥
With the blazing of the war, the great egoist warriors shouted loudly.
सिर धड़ बाहां गन ले फुल जेहै बाड़ी ॥
The pieces of head, trunk and arms look like garden-flowers.
जापे कटे बाढीआं रुख चंदन आरी ॥४८॥
And (the bodies) appear like the trees of sandalwood cut and sawed by the carpenters.48.
दुहां कंधारां मुहि जुड़े जा सट पई खरवार कउ ॥
When the trumpet, enveloped by the hide of a donkey, was beaten, both the forces faced each other.
तक तक कैबरि दुरगसाह तक मारे भले जुझार कउ ॥
Looking at the warriors, Durga pointedly shot her arrows on the brave fighters.
पैदल मारे हाथीआं संगि रथ गिरे असवार कउ ॥
The warriors on foot were killed, the elephants were killed alongwith the fall of the chariots and horse- riders.
सोहन संजा बागड़ा जणु लगे फुल अनार कउ ॥
The tips of arrows penetrated in the armour like the flowers on pomegranate-plants.
गुसे आई कालका हथि सजे लै तरवार कउ ॥
The goddess Kali got enraged, holding her sword in her right hand
एदू पारउ ओत पार हरनाकसि कई हजार कउ ॥
She destroyed several thousand demons (Hiranayakashipus) from this end of the field to the other end.
जिण इका रही कंधार कउ ॥
The only one is conquering the army
सद रहमत तेरे वार कउ ॥४९॥
O goddess! Hail, hail to Thy blow.49.

दुहां कंधारां मुहि जुड़े सट पई जमधाण कउ ॥
The trumpet, enveloped by the hide of the male buffalo, the vehicle of Yama, was beaten and both the armies faced each other.
तद खिंग नसुंभ नचाइआ डाल उपरि बरगसताण कउ ॥
Then Nisumbh caused the horse to dance, putting on his back the saddle-armour.
फड़ी बिलंद मगाइउस फुरमाइस करि मुलतान कउ ॥
She held the big bow, which was caused to be brought on order form Musltan.
गुसे आई साहमणे रण अंदरि घतण घाण कउ ॥
In her fury, she came in front in order to fill the battlefield with the mud of blood and fat.
अगै तेग वगाई दुरगसाह बढ सुंभन बही पलाण कउ ॥
Durga struck the sword in front of her, cutting the demon-king, penetrated through the horse-saddle.
रड़की जाइ कै धरत कउ बढ पाखर बढ किकाण कउ ॥
Then it penetrated further and struck the earth after cutting the saddle-armour and the horse.
बीर पलाणो डिगिआ करि सिजदा सुंभ सुजाण कउ ॥
The great hero (Nisumbh) fell down from the horse-saddle, offering salutation to the wise Sumbh.
साबास सलोणे खाण कउ ॥
Hail, hail, to the winsome chieftain (Khan).
सदा साबास तेरे ताण कउ ॥
Hail, hail, ever to thy strength.
तारीफां पान चबाण कउ ॥
Praises are offered for the chewing of betel.
सद रहमत कैफां खान कउ ॥
Hail, hail to thy addiction.
सद रहमत तुरे नचाण कउ ॥५०॥
Hail hail, to thy horse-control.50.

दुरगा अतै दानवी गह संघरि कथे ॥
Durga and demons sounded their trumpets, in the remarkable war.
ओरड़ उठे सूरमे आइ डाहे मथे ॥
The warriors arose in great numbers and have come to fight.
कट तुफंगी कैबरी दल गाहि निकथे ॥
They have come to tread through the forces in order to destroy (the enemy) with guns and arrows.
देखणि जंग फरेसते असमानो लथे ॥५१॥
The angels come down (to the earth) from the sky in order to see the war.51.

दोहां कंधारां मुह जुड़े दल घुरे नगारे ॥
The trumpets have sounded in the army and both the forces face each other.
ओरड़ आए सूरमे सिरदार अणिआरे ॥
The chief and brave warriors swayed in the field.
लै के तेगां बरछीआं हथिआर उभारे ॥
They raised their weapons including the swords and daggers.
टोप पटेला पाखरां गलि संज सवारे ॥
They have bedecked themselves with helmets on their heads, and armour around their necks alongwith their horse-sddles with belts.
लै के बरछी दुरगसाह बहु दानव मारे ॥
Durga holding her dagger, killed many demons.
चड़े रथी गज घोड़िई मार भुइ ते डारे ॥
She killed and threw those on the round who were riding chariots, elephants and horses.
जणु हलवाई सीख नाल विंन्ह वड़े उतारे ॥५२॥
It appear that the confectioner has cooked small round cakes of grounded pulse, piercing them with a spike.52.

PAURI
दुहां कंधारां मुहि जुड़े नाल धउसा भारी ॥
Alongwith the sounding of the large trumpet, both the forces faced each other.
लई भगउती दुरगसाह वर जागन भारी ॥
Durga held out her sword, appearing like great lustrous fire
लाई राजे सुंभ नो रतु पीऐ पिआरी ॥
She struck it on the king Sumbh and this lovely weapon drinks blood.
सुंभ पालाणो डिगिआ उपमा बीचारी ॥
Sumbh fell down from the saddle for which the following simile hath been thought.
डुब रतू नालहु निकली बरछी दुधारी ॥
That the double-edged dagger, smeared with blood, which hath come out (from the body of Sumbh)
जाण रजादी उतरी पैन सूही सारी ॥५३॥
Seems like a princess coming down from her loft, wearing the red sari.53.
पउड़ी ॥

दुरगा अतै दानवी भेड़ पइआ सबाहीं ॥
The war between Durga and the demons started early in the morning.
ससत्र पजूते दुरगसाह गह सभनीं बाहीं ॥
Durga held her weapons firmly in all her arms.
सुंभ निसुंभ संघारिआ वथ जेहे साहीं ॥
She killed both Sumbh and Nisumbh, who were the masters of all the materials.
फउजां राकसि आरीआं देखि रोवनि धाहीं ॥
Seeing this, the helpless forces of the demons, weep bitterly.
मुहि कुड़ूचे घाह दे छड घोड़े राहीं ॥
Accepting their defeat (by putting the straws of grass in their mouth), and leaving their horses in the way
भजदे होए मारीअन मुड़ झाकन नाहीं ॥५४॥
They are being killed, while fleeing, without looking back.54.

PAURI
सुंभ निसुंभ पठाइआ जम दे धाम नो ॥
Sumbh and Nisumbh were dispatched to the abode of Yama
इंद्र सद बुलाइआ राज अभिसेख नो ॥
And Indra was called for crowning him.
सिर पर छत्र फिराइआ राजे इंद्र दै ॥
The canopy was held up over the head of king Indra.
चउदह लोकां छाइआ जसु जगमात दा ॥
The praise of the mother of the universe spread over all the fourteen worlds.
दुरगा पाठ बणाइआ सभे पउड़ीआं ॥
All the Pauris (stanza) of this DURGA PATH (The text about the exploits of Durga) have been composed
फेर न जूनी आइआ जिन इह गाइआ ॥५५॥
And that person who sings it, will not take birth again.55.
