Chitr and Gupt, the angels of the conscious and the subconscious who keep the record of actions, and the Righteous Judge of Dharma who reads this record, sing of You.

Shiva, Brahma and the Goddess of Beauty, ever adorned by You, sing of You.

The Pandits, the religious scholars who recite the Vedas, with the supreme sages of all the ages, sing of You.

The Mohinis, the enchanting heavenly beauties who entice hearts in paradise, in this world, and in the underworld of the subconscious, sing of You.
gaavan tudhano ratan upaae tere atthasatth teerath naale |
The celestial jewels created by You, and the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, sing of You.

The brave and mighty warriors sing of You. The spiritual heroes and the four sources of creation sing of You.

The worlds, solar systems and galaxies, created and arranged by Your Hand, sing of You.

They alone sing of You, who are pleasing to Your Will. Your devotees are imbued with Your Sublime Essence.

He created the world, with its various colors, species of beings, and the variety of Maya.

Having created the creation, He watches over it Himself, by His Greatness.

He does whatever He pleases. No one can issue any order to Him.

All Truth, all austere discipline, all goodness,

all the great miraculous spiritual powers of the Siddhas

without You, no one has attained such powers.

Those who have not obtained the Sublime Essence of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, are most unfortunate; they are led away by the Messenger of Death.

Those who have not sought the Sanctuary of the True Guru and the Sangat, the Holy Congregation-cursed are their lives, and cursed are their hopes of life. ||3||

Those humble servants of the Lord who have attained the Company of the True Guru, have such pre-ordained destiny inscribed on their foreheads.

For You, many, for You, so very many read the various Simritees and Shaastras. They perform rituals and religious rites.

You are the Primal Being, the Most Wonderful Creator. There is no other as Great as You.

Age after age, You are the One. Forever and ever, You are the One. You never change, O Creator Lord.

The Temporal Lord, who created the whole world
dev dait jachhan upajaayo |
Who created gods, demons and yakshas
aad ant ekai avataaraa |
He is the only one form the beginning to the end

I consider Him only my Guru.385.
namasakaar tis hee ko hamaaree |
I salute Him, non else, but Him
sakal prajaa jin aap savaaree |
Who has created Himself and His subject
sivakan ko sivagun sukh deeo |
He bestows Divine virtues and happiness on His servants
satrun ko pal mo badh keeo |386|
He destroys the enemies instantly.386.
ghatt ghatt ke antar kee jaanat |
He knows the inner feelings of every heart
bhale bure kee peer pachhaanat |
He knows the anguish of both good and bad
cheettee te kunchar asathoolaa |
From the ant to the solid elephant
sabh par kripaa drisatt kar foolaa |387|
He casts His Graceful glance on all and feels pleased.387.
santan dukh paae te dukhee |
He is painful, when He sees His saints in grief
sukh paae saadhun ke sukhee |
He is happy, when His saints are happy.
ek ek kee peer pachhaanain |
He knows the agony of everyone
ghatt ghatt ke patt patt kee jaanain |388|
He knows the innermost secrets of every heart.388.
jab udakarakh karaa karataaraa |
When the Creator projected Himself,
prajaa dharat tab deh apaaraa |
His creation manifested itself in innumerable forms
jab aakarakh karat ho kabahoon |
When at any time He withdraws His creation,
tum mai milat deh dhar sabhahoon |389|
all the physical forms are merged in Him.389.
jete badan srisatt sabh dhaarai |
All the bodies of living beings created in the world
aap aapanee boojh uchaarai |
speak about Him according to their understanding
tum sabh hee te rehat niraalam |
But Thou, O Lord! live quite apart from everything
jaanat bed bhed ar aalam |390|
this fact is know to the Vedas and the learned.390.
nirankaar nribikaar niralanbh |
The Lord is Formless, Sinless and shelterless:
aad aneel anaad asanbh |
He is the Primal Power, without Blemish, without Beginning and Unborn
taa kaa moorrh uchaarat bhedaa |
The fool claims boastfully about the knowledge of His secrets,
jaa ko bhev na paavat bedaa |391|
which even the Vedas do not know.391.
taa ko kar paahan anumaanat |
The fool considers Him a stone,
mahaa moorrh kachh bhed na jaanat |
but the great fool does not know any secret
mahaadev ko kehat sadaa siv |
He calls Shiva “The Eternal Lord,
nirankaar kaa cheenat neh bhiv |392|
“but he does not know the secret of the Formless Lord.392.
aap aapanee budh hai jetee |
According to ones won intellect,
baranat bhin bhin tuhi tetee |
one describes Thee differently
tumaraa lakhaa na jaae pasaaraa |
The limits of Thy creation cannot be known
kih bidh sajaa pratham sansaaraa |393|
and how the world was fashioned in the beginning?393.
ekai roop anoop saroopaa |
He hath only one unparalleled Form
rank bhayo raav kahee bhoopaa |
He manifests Himself as a poor man or a king at different places
anddaj jeraj setaj keenee |
He created creatures from eggs, wombs and perspiration
autabhuj khaan bahur rach deenee |394|
Then He created the vegetable kingdom.394.
kahoon fool raajaa hvai baitthaa |
Somewhere He sits joyfully as a king
kahoon simatt bhiyo sankar ikaitthaa |
Somewhere He contracts Himself as Shiva, the Yogi
sagaree srisatt dikhaae achanbhav |
All His creation unfolds wonderful things
aad jugaad saroop suyanbhav |395|
He, the Primal Power, is from the beginning and Self-Existent.395.
ab rachhaa meree tum karo |
O Lord! keep me now under Thy protection
sikh ubaar asakh sangharo |
Protect my disciples and destroy my enemies
dushatt jite utthavat utapaataa |
sakal malechh karo ran ghaataa |396|
All the villains creations outrage and all the infidels be destroyed in the battlefield.396.
je asidhuj tav saranee pare |
tin ke dusatt dukhit hvai mare |
O Supreme Destroyer! those who sought Thy refuge, their enemies met painful death
purakh javan pag pare tihaare |
tin ke tum sankatt sabh ttaare |397|
The persons who fell at Thy Feet, Thou didst remove all their troubles.397.
jo kal ko ik baar dhiaihai |
taa ke kaal nikatt neh aihai |
Those who meditate even on the Supreme Destroyer, the death cannot approach them
rachhaa hoe taeh sabh kaalaa |
They remain protected at all times
dusatt arisatt ttaren tatakaalaa |398|
Their enemies and troubles come to and end instantly.398.
kripaa drisatt tan jaeh nihariho |
taa ke taap tanak mo hariho |
Upon whomsoever Thou dost cast Thy favourable glance, they are absolved of sins instantly
ridh sidh ghar mo sabh hoee |
They have all the worldly and spiritual pleasures in their homes
dushatt chhaah chhvai sakai na koee |399|
None of th enemies can even touch their shadow.399.
ek baar jin tumai sanbhaaraa |
kaal faas te taeh ubaaraa |
He, who remembered Thee even once, Thou didst protect him from the noose of death
jin nar naam tihaaro kahaa |
daarid dusatt dokh te rahaa |400|
Those persons, who repeated Thy Name, they were saved from poverty and attacks of enemies.400.
kharrag ket mai saran tihaaree |
aap haath dai lehu ubaaree |
Bestow thy help own me at all places protect me from the design of my enemies. 401.
sarab tthauar mo hohu sahaaee |
dusatt dokh te lehu bachaaee |401|
Bestow Thy help on me at all places and protect me from the designs of my enemies.401.

The Mother of the world has been kind towards me and I have completed the book this auspicious night

The Lord is the destroyer of all the sins of the body and all the malicious and wicked persons.402.

When Mahakal became kind, He immediately caused me to complete this book
man baachhat fal paavai soee |
dookh na tisai biaapat koee |403|
He will obtain the fruit desired by the mind (who will read or listen to this book) and no suffering will occur to him.403.
sunai gung jo yaeh su rasanaa paavee |
The dumb, who will listen to it, will be blessed with the tongue to speak
sunai moorr chit laae chaturataa aavee |
The fool, who will listen to it attentively, will get wisdom
dookh darad bhau nikatt na tin nar ke rahai |
That person will be absolved of suffering, pain or fear,
ho jo yaa kee ek baar chauapee ko kahai |404|
Who will even once recite this Chaupai-prayer.404.

I do not adore Ganesha in the beginning and also do not mediatate on Krishna and Vishnu

I have only heard about them with my ears and I do not recognize them my consciousness is absorbed at the feet of the Supreme Kal (the Immanent Brahman).434.

The Supreme Kal (God) is my Protector and O Steel-Purusha Lort! I am Thy slave

Protect me, considering me as Thy own and do me the honour of catching my arm.435.

chun chun satr hamaare mareeai |
Sustain me, considering me as Thy own and destroy my enemies, picking them up
deg teg jag mai doaoo chalai |
raakh aap muhi aaur na dalai |436|
O Lord with Thy Grace, let the free kitchen and Sword (for the protection of the lowly) ever flourish through me and none should be able to kill me except You.436.
tum mam karahu sadaa pratipaaraa |
tum saahib mai daas tihaaraa |
Sustain me ever, O Lord! Thou art my Master and I am Thy slave
jaan aapanaa mujhai nivaaj |
aap karo hamare sabh kaaj |437|
Be Gracious towards me, considering me as Thy own and complete all my works.437.
tum ho sabh raajan ke raajaa |
O Lord! Thou art eh king of all kings and Gracious towards the poor
aape aap gareeb nivaajaa |
Be Benevolent towards me,
daas jaan kar kripaa karahu muhi |
Considering me as Thy own,
haar paraa mai aan davaar tuhi |438|
Because, I have surrendered and fallen at Thy Gate.438.
apunaa jaan karo pratipaaraa |
Sustain me, considering me as Thy own
tum saahib mai kinkar thaaraa |
Thou art my Lord and I am Thy slave
daas jaan kai haath ubaaro |
Considering me as Thy slave,
hamare sabh baireean sanghaaro |439|
Save me with Thy own hands and destroy all my enemies.439.

At the very outset, I meditate on Bhagavata (Lord-God)
bahur karo kabitaa bidh naanaa |
Then endeavour to compose various types of poesy.

I speak out the memories of Krishna according to my
chook hoe kab lehu sudhaaro |440|
Intellect and if there remins any shortcoming in it, then the poets may improve it.440.

jo nij prabh mo so kahaa so kahihon jag maeh |
Whatever my Lord said to me, I say the same in the world.

Those who have meditated on the Lord, ultimately go to heaven.59.
har har jan due ek hai bib bichaar kachh naeh |
The Lord and His devotees are one, there is no difference between them.
jal te upaj tarang jiau jal hee bikhai samaeh |60|
Just as the wave of water, arising in water, merges in water.60.
jab aaeis prabh ko bhayo janam dharaa jag aae |
When the Lord Willed, I was born on this earth.
ab mai kathaa sanchhep te sabhahoon kehat sunaae |64|

I stood up with folded hands and bowing down my head, I said:
panth chalai tab jagat mai jab tum karahu sahaae |30|
“The path (Panth) shall prevail only in the world, with THY ASSISTANCE.”30.
je je tumare dhiaan ko nit utth dhiaihai sant |
All those saints, who will ever meditate on Thee
ant lahaige mukat fal paavahige bhagavant |6|262|
They will attain salvation at the end and will realize the Lord.6.262.
kaal purakh kee dehi mo kottik bisan mahes |
In the body of the Immanent Lord, million of Vishnus and Shivas abide.
kott indr brahamaa kite rav sas kror jales |1|
Million of Indras, Brahmas, Suryas, Chandras and Varunas are present thre in His divine body.1.
raam kathaa jug jug attal sabh koee bhaakhat net |
surag baas raghubar karaa sagaree puree samet |858|
The story of Ram remain immortal throughout the ages and in this way Ram went to abide in heaven alongwith (all the resident of) the city.858.
paane gahe jab te tumare tab te koaoo aankh tare naheen aanayo |
O God! the day when I caught hold of your feet, I do not bring anyone else under my sight
raam raheem puraan kuraan anek kahain mat ek na maanayo |
None other is liked by me now the Puranas and the Quran try to know Thee by the names of Ram and Rahim and talk about you through several stories,
sinmrit saasatr bed sabhai bahu bhed kahain ham ek na jaanayo |
The Simritis, Shastras and Vedas describe several mysteries of yours, but I do not agree with any of them.
sree asipaan kripaa tumaree kar mai na kehayo sabh tohi bakhaanayo |863|
O sword-wielder God! This all has been described by Thy Grace, what power can I have to write all this?.863.
sagal duaar kau chhaadd kai gahio tuhaaro duaar |
O Lord! I have forsaken all other doors and have caught hold of only Thy door. O Lord! Thou has caught hold of my arm

I, Govind, am Thy serf, kindly take (care of me and) protect my honour.864.

satigur ta paaeaa sehaj setee man vajeea vaadhaaeea |
I have found the True Guru, with intuitive ease, and my mind vibrates with the music of bliss.
raag ratan paravaar pareea sabad gaavan aaeea |
The jewelled melodies and their related celestial harmonies have come to sing the Word of the Shabad.
sabado ta gaavahu haree keraa man jinee vasaaeaa |
The Lord dwells within the minds of those who sing the Shabad.
kahai naanak anand hoaa satiguroo mai paaeaa |1|
Says Nanak, I am in ecstasy, for I have found my True Guru. ||1||
e man meriaa too sadaa rahu har naale |
O my mind, remain always with the Lord.
har naal rahu too man mere dookh sabh visaaranaa |
Remain always with the Lord, O my mind, and all sufferings will be forgotten.
angeekaar ohu kare teraa kaaraj sabh savaaranaa |
He will accept You as His own, and all your affairs will be perfectly arranged.
sabhanaa galaa samarath suaamee so kiau manahu visaare |
Our Lord and Master is all-powerful to do all things, so why forget Him from your mind?
kahai naanak man mere sadaa rahu har naale |2|
Says Nanak, O my mind, remain always with the Lord. ||2||
saache saahibaa kiaa naahee ghar terai |
O my True Lord and Master, what is there which is not in Your celestial home?
ghar ta terai sabh kichh hai jis dehi su paave |
Everything is in Your home; they receive, unto whom You give.
sadaa sifat salaah teree naam man vasaave |
Constantly singing Your Praises and Glories, Your Name is enshrined in the mind.
naam jin kai man vasiaa vaaje sabad ghanere |
The divine melody of the Shabad vibrates for those, within whose minds the Naam abides.
kahai naanak sache saahib kiaa naahee ghar terai |3|
Says Nanak, O my True Lord and Master, what is there which is not in Your home? ||3||
saachaa naam meraa aadhaaro |
The True Name is my only support.
saach naam adhaar meraa jin bhukhaa sabh gavaaeea |
The True Name is my only support; it satisfies all hunger.
kar saant sukh man aae vasiaa jin ichhaa sabh pujaaeea |
It has brought peace and tranquility to my mind; it has fulfilled all my desires.
sadaa kurabaan keetaa guroo vittahu jis deea ehi vaddiaaeea |
I am forever a sacrifice to the Guru, who possesses such glorious greatness.
kahai naanak sunahu santahu sabad dharahu piaaro |
Says Nanak, listen, O Saints; enshrine love for the Shabad.
saachaa naam meraa aadhaaro |4|
The True Name is my only support. ||4||
vaaje panch sabad tith ghar sabhaagai |
The Panch Shabad, the five primal sounds, vibrate in that blessed house.
ghar sabhaagai sabad vaaje kalaa jit ghar dhaareea |
In that blessed house, the Shabad vibrates; He infuses His almighty power into it.
panch doot tudh vas keete kaal kanttak maariaa |
Through You, we subdue the five demons of desire, and slay Death, the torturer.
dhur karam paaeaa tudh jin kau si naam har kai laage |
Those who have such pre-ordained destiny are attached to the Lord's Name.
kahai naanak teh sukh hoaa tith ghar anahad vaaje |5|
Says Nanak, they are at peace, and the unstruck sound current vibrates within their homes. ||5||
anad sunahu vaddabhaageeho sagal manorath poore |
Listen to the song of bliss, O most fortunate ones; all your longings shall be fulfilled.
paarabraham prabh paaeaa utare sagal visoore |
I have obtained the Supreme Lord God, and all sorrows have been forgotten.
dookh rog santaap utare sunee sachee baanee |
Pain, illness and suffering have departed, listening to the True Bani.
sant saajan bhe sarase poore gur te jaanee |
The Saints and their friends are in ecstasy, knowing the Perfect Guru.
sunate puneet kahate pavit satigur rahiaa bharapoore |
Pure are the listeners, and pure are the speakers; the True Guru is all-pervading and permeating.
binavant naanak gur charan laage vaaje anahad toore |40|1|
Prays Nanak, touching the Guru's Feet, the unstruck sound current of the celestial bugles vibrates and resounds. ||40||1||

Mundaavanee, Fifth Mehl:
thaal vich tin vasatoo peeo sat santokh veechaaro |
Upon this Plate, three things have been placed: Truth, Contentment and Contemplation.
amrit naam tthaakur kaa peo jis kaa sabhas adhaaro |
The Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam, the Name of our Lord and Master, has been placed upon it as well; it is the Support of all.
je ko khaavai je ko bhunchai tis kaa hoe udhaaro |
One who eats it and enjoys it shall be saved.
eeh vasat tajee neh jaaee nit nit rakh ur dhaaro |
This thing can never be forsaken; keep this always and forever in your mind.
tam sansaar charan lag tareeai sabh naanak braham pasaaro |1|
The dark world-ocean is crossed over, by grasping the Feet of the Lord; O Nanak, it is all the extension of God. ||1||

Salok, Fifth Mehl:
teraa keetaa jaato naahee maino jog keetoee |
I have not appreciated what You have done for me, Lord; only You can make me worthy.
mai niraguniaare ko gun naahee aape taras peoee |
I am unworthy - I have no worth or virtues at all. You have taken pity on me.
taras peaa miharaamat hoee satigur sajan miliaa |
You took pity on me, and blessed me with Your Mercy, and I have met the True Guru, my Friend.
naanak naam milai taan jeevaan tan man theevai hariaa |1|
O Nanak, if I am blessed with the Naam, I live, and my body and mind blossom forth. ||1||
tithai too samarath jithai koe naeh |
Where You are, Almighty Lord, there is no one else.
othai teree rakh aganee udar maeh |
There, in the fire of the mother's womb, You protected us.
sun kai jam ke doot naae terai chhadd jaeh |
Hearing Your Name, the Messenger of Death runs away.
bhaujal bikham asagaahu gurasabadee paar paeh |
The terrifying, treacherous, impassible world-ocean is crossed over, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
jin kau lagee piaas amrit see khaeh |
Those who feel thirst for You, take in Your Ambrosial Nectar.
kal meh eho pun gun govind gaeh |
This is the only act of goodness in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, to sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe.
sabhasai no kirapaal samaale saeh saeh |
He is Merciful to all; He sustains us with each and every breath.
birathaa koe na jaae ji aavai tudh aaeh |9|
Those who come to You with love and faith are never turned away empty-handed. ||9||

Salok, Fifth Mehl:
antar gur aaraadhanaa jihavaa jap gur naau |
Deep within yourself, worship the Guru in adoration, and with your tongue, chant the Guru's Name.
netree satigur pekhanaa sravanee sunanaa gur naau |
Let your eyes behold the True Guru, and let your ears hear the Guru's Name.
satigur setee ratiaa daragah paaeeai tthaau |
Attuned to the True Guru, you shall receive a place of honor in the Court of the Lord.
kahu naanak kirapaa kare jis no eeh vath dee |
Says Nanak, this treasure is bestowed on those who are blessed with His Mercy.
jag meh utam kaadteeeh virale keee kee |1|
In the midst of the world, they are known as the most pious - they are rare indeed. ||1||
rakhe rakhanahaar aap ubaarian |
O Savior Lord, save us and take us across.
gur kee pairee paae kaaj savaarian |
Falling at the feet of the Guru, our works are embellished with perfection.
hoaa aap deaal manahu na visaarian |
You have become kind, merciful and compassionate; we do not forget You from our minds.
saadh janaa kai sang bhavajal taarian |
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, we are carried across the terrifying world-ocean.
saakat nindak dusatt khin maeh bidaarian |
In an instant, You have destroyed the faithless cynics and slanderous enemies.
tis saahib kee ttek naanak manai maeh |
That Lord and Master is my Anchor and Support; O Nanak, hold firm in your mind.
jis simarat sukh hoe sagale dookh jaeh |2|
Remembering Him in meditation, happiness comes, and all sorrows and pains simply vanish. ||2||
